Gertrud "Oma" Lord

In 1956, she met the love of her life, Charles Lord, while he was stationed in Germany with the Army. The two were married, and in 1958, they welcomed their first son. Shortly after, they moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where they had two more sons. Gertrud dedicated herself to her family, lovingly raising her three sons.

Determined to learn English, she taught herself the language by watching TV and helping her children with their reading and writing homework. For a time, she worked for the Atlanta Police Department as a crosswalk guard.

Gertrud was a nurturing soul who took care of many children in her in-home daycare and later at KinderCare. She enjoyed yard work where she was an excellent mower and tended to her garden. She also enjoyed crocheting and needlework, leaving behind many handcrafted treasures for her family. She was a talented bowler and had a knack for mechanical work. Alongside her husband, she restored antique cars, proudly maintaining and keeping them in pristine condition.

She will be remembered for her kindness, selflessness, and caring nature. Gertrud was deeply involved in the lives of her grandchildren. At the age of 70, she taught herself how to text to stay in touch with them regularly.

Gertrud is survived by her sons, Charles Lord, Jr. (Terri), John Lord (Nanette), and Billy Lord (Rita); nine cherished grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and her sister, Elli Nielson. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Lord, Sr.

A visitation will be held on September 4, 2024, from 4-8 pm at Roswell Funeral Home. The funeral service will be on September 5, 2024, at 11 am at the Roswell Funeral Home Chapel. Gertrud will be laid to rest beside her husband, Charles, at Green Lawn Cemetery following the service.

Gertrud was a beacon of love and strength, a woman whose kindness touched everyone she met. Her selfless spirit, nurturing heart, and boundless dedication to her family and friends will forever be cherished and remembered.
