Gilbert J. Muñoz (69) died Tuesday, January 29, 2013, after suffering a stroke on Sunday. He was born in Havana, Cuba and grew up in Key West. He graduated from Key West HS (62) and promptly joined the Army. After enjoying jumping out of air planes and shooting guns in defense of our nation, Gil joined the Border Patrol. When he returned home to Key West, he enrolled at Florida Keys Community College where he met and fell in love with Rita Johns. They married in 1967 and had two daughters. After retiring from a 30-year career with AT&T, Gil found a way to share his passion for marksmanship by volunteering at Shepherd Spinal Center and with the Roswell High School rifle team. His work with the kids on the rifle team proved to be one of the most rewarding experiences of his life, and he came to think of his shooters as members of his family. Gil is survived by his wife Rita, daughters Danielle Muñoz and Symantha O’Byrne, son-in-law Mike O’Byrne, grandson Conor O’Byrne, step-grandson Sean Bishop O’Byrne and Sean’s daughters Miriya and Selene, along with Gil’s sisters Niurka Burge, Ceres Silva, Ilka Puig, and Celia (Isa) Muñoz. A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, February 2 at the Roswell Funeral Home at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in Gil’s name to the charity of your choice.
