Gloria was born in a leap year on March 1, 1932 in Brooklyn NY. Her parents were thrilled to have a girl after losing their first daughter, Rose in infanthood and after four sons, Gloria's beloved brothers Ray, Ralph, Bobby and Danny. They were so happy with the joyous news that proud father Dominick D’Avino hired an orchestra to play at her christening party at their home in Bensonhurst!
Gloria had a wonderful childhood taking the Sea Beach subway line to Coney Island with her friends and spending many hours shopping in Macy’s and walking the avenue with her beloved father. Her beloved mother, Concetta, was a seamstress and Gloria was treated to the finest wardrobe!
Gloria lived a fun-filled life with Sweet 16 parties, dinners at the Copacabana and her prom at the famed Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. Gloria’s first job out of high school was working for Electrolux and she was so proud to work at 500 Fifth Avenue!
Gloria and her loving husband Rudy lived around the corner from each other and met in kindergarten. Gloria and Rudy’s wedding was quite the extravaganza and was filmed in living color, a remarkable achievement in 1952.
Gloria and Rudy moved from Brooklyn to Wood-Ridge, NJ with their son Robert after Rudy’s Marine Corps service. Three more children followed: Steven, JoAnn and Diane.
Gloria raised her family, enjoyed a love of cooking delicious meals and took pride in her extensive recipe collection. She also enjoyed shopping, baking, and spending time with many wonderful friends and family members. She went back into the workforce and was employed for many years by Lola Products and then started an in-home daycare. She loved children and stayed in touch over the years with many of the working parents and their children.
Gloria and Rudy loved living in Wood-Ridge and later Bridgewater NJ. They also lived in Boynton Beach Florida as snowbirds.
In 2013 Gloria and Rudy moved to Georgia to be near their son, daughter, and grandchildren.
Gloria is survived by her loving husband, Rudy, beloved children Robert (Sunny), Steven, JoAnn (Michael), Diane (Mike), beloved former daughters-in-law Ana and Sue, beloved grandchildren Jennifer (Michael), Amanda (Harris), David, Ali, Brad (Alex), Justin, Olivia, Stephanie, Ryan, beloved great grandchildren Madison and James, beloved brother Ralph (103), beloved sister-in-law and childhood best friend, Catherine Conti, as well as many beloved nephews and nieces and many beloved friends.
Gloria’s wise and loving personality and her ability to make everyone feel special will remain in our hearts forever, along with her fabulous homemade manicotti, Christmas Eve fish fry, chicken dinosaurs, zucchini pie, and countless other yummy dishes.
The family wishes to extend their deepest thanks to the many caregivers who made Gloria’s remaining days full of fun, light, laughter, and comfort. We are eternally grateful to them.
