Grant B Curtis

April 22, 1924July 13, 2014

Grant B. Curtis, age 90, of Cumming, GA passed away on July 13 after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Chilton Curtis.

Grant Curtis was born on April 22, 1924 in Columbia, TN, just outside Nashville. After graduating from Isaac Litton High School in Nashville, he enrolled in Vanderbilt University in 1942 to study engineering. The following year, he entered the U.S. Navy’s V-12 program and transferred to Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received, in 1945, a degree in mechanical engineering and a commission as an ensign in the Navy. Grant and Dorothy were married in November 1945 in New York City.

After the war, Grant settled in Atlanta and began work in commercial heating and air contracting. In 1966, Grant joined Georgia Tech as the lead engineer in the physical plant department. Before retiring from Georgia Tech in 1986, he worked for ten years in the Georgia Tech’s Engineering Experiment Station in energy research.

In addition to his widow, Grant is survived by his sons, Bradley (Melanie), Carlton (Jan) and Paul; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and six nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Grant and Sara Curtis, and a brother, William Curtis, all of Nashville.

For over 65 years, Grant was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chamblee, which relocated in 1993 to become Johns Creek Baptist Church. He held many leadership positions, including chairman of the Board of Deacons. He had a passion for singing in the choir and for teaching Sunday School.

Memorials services for Grant Curtis will be held on Wednesday, July 30 at 2 p.m. at Johns Creek Baptist Church, 6910 McGinnis Ferry Rd, Alpharetta, GA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Johns Creek Baptist Church.

I never met Grant Curtis but worked for his son, Carlton, for many years at The Coca-Cola Company. My thoughts are with Carlton and Jan and the entire Curtis family. The apple never falls far from the tree.

I worked with Grant for 7 years at Georgia Tech and have fond memories of him and his stories. He was the epitomy of a southern gentleman and often had behavioral tips for this displaced "Yankee". I loved hearing his stories of the WWII era. I know he will be missed by his family, but I also know they will have many cherished memories of a good man.
