Herman H. “Sam” Barnett, 84 of Cumming, GA died peacefully at home on April 13th. He was a 1954 graduate of Fort Lauderdale High and the University of Florida in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in Business and Personnel. After college, he joined the United States Army and served until he was honorably discharged in 1962. He met and married Sylvia Liles of Baytown, TX at First Baptist of Fort Lauderdale in 1966. At the age of 37, he moved to Live Oak, FL as president and co-owner of Blake-Barnett Pontiac GMC Trucks.
Skilled in leadership, Sam served on the local Suwannee County School Board as well as serving on the State School Board Association’s insurance committee. He was active on the Suwannee County Development Authority, a board member of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Kiwanis Club, as well as serving on the Suwannee County Mental Health Board. He was past president of the Fort Lauderdale University of Florida Alumni Association. He was a faithful servant of Christ and served as a deacon for First Baptist Church of Live Oak & later for Mandarin Baptist Church of Jacksonville.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Sylvia Barnett, son Brad Barnett (Amy) Jacksonville - FL, son Rick Barnett (Renee) Cumming - GA, and 6 grandchildren: Robert, Mason, Virginia, Connor, Allison & Lauren Barnett.
