On March 11, 2025, James Michael Bruce passed away suddenly from a heart attack. Mike (aka Bubba) was a character unlike anyone you have ever met. Mike was a great father, husband, friend and neighbor on top of being a great drummer, song writer, author, actor and an exceptional storyteller.
Mike was born in Anniston, Alabama on February 12, 1951 to Polly and James (Jim) Bruce. He moved to Albertville, Alabama when he was 6 and lived there until he moved to Atlanta. In 1968, Mike and some friends formed a band that won the hearts of countless people that remained passionate and loyal fans for over 50 years. The band was named WARM - Wain Green, Allen Breland, Ray Honea and Mike Bruce. Lanice Morrison joined the band a few years later and together they created the music that served as the soundtrack of our lives in North Alabama, throughout the south and beyond. As recently as last spring loyal fans gathered to hear their music and celebrate the band 56 years later. How's that for lasting impact. Mike continued to drum throughout his life, part of several bands including the Box Masters with his friend Billy Bob Thornton, Unknown Hinson to name a few.
Mike was husband to Joani Yarbrough Bruce, father to Whitney Bruce Yarborough, Evan Bruce and the late Mitchell Bruce, Lacy Yarbrough and a grandfather to Elora Bruce and Grayson Ridley, Naveah, Doc and Reed Robinson. Mike was so proud to "come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee" so yep in true Bubba fashion, he had a banjo tattoo on his knee. Those of us that knew and loved him find the words to describe him very difficult - he was so colorful, funny, creative and loving... just a remarkable man and we count ourselves so very blessed to have been his family/friends.
We will gather soon to share our love, stores and celebrate our friend. Stay tuned for details and wherever you are, raise a toast to this amazing man. To Bubba!!!!
