John D., aged 84, passed away on June 29, 2025. Born in 1940 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Bert and Bessie D., he moved to England during his early childhood. He later earned his Ph.D. from the University of Bristol before relocating to the United States.
John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He will be remembered for his sharp intellect, deep love of philosophy, and ever-present sense of humor—especially his fondness for puns and wordplay. A true English gentleman, he approached life with warmth, kindness, and a gracious spirit.
Outside of his academic pursuits, John enjoyed playing pool and ping pong at home with friends, attending musical performances and operas, and exploring art galleries. His passion for the arts extended into his own creative work, including photography, painting, and digital art in his later years. He loved the outdoors and was known for his early morning walks, often setting out at dawn with his camera to explore.
John dedicated over 48 years to teaching philosophy at Western Michigan University, where he left a lasting impact on generations of students and colleagues. A respected scholar, he authored numerous books and articles published in professional journals.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Rosemary; his daughters, Karen and Heather; his grandchildren, Matthew, Andrew, and Kayla; and his brother, Robert. He will also be fondly remembered by his lifelong friends, Phil and Helene, as well as extended family members and many dear friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Georgia at a later date to honor John’s remarkable life and legacy.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in John’s memory be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, https://www.alz.org/?form=FUNDHYMMBXU
