Devoted Husband and Adventurer:
John was the beloved husband of Carol Cree (née Wray) McMeekin. Together, they embraced a life filled with travel and new experiences. Their journey took them from Calgary, Alberta, to Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, before relocating to Toronto, Ontario. Their adventures continued as they moved to several locations in the United States, including Wilmington, Delaware; Huntington, Connecticut; Matthews, North Carolina; and Lawrenceville, Georgia. After spending time in Brussels, Belgium, and Livingston, Scotland, John and Carol eventually settled in Newnan, Georgia, where they made their home for 23 years. Along the way, they built enduring friendships and delighted in playing golf wherever their travels led them.
John’s Career Journey:
Early Career in Retail
John describes his early years as having “grown up” in retail, spending eight years working in Western Canada. This foundational experience provided him with valuable insights into the retail industry and set the stage for his future endeavors.
Transition to International Apparel
After his time in Canadian retail, John accepted an opportunity with an American manufacturer to launch a U.S. children’s apparel line across Canada. The project proved to be highly successful, resulting in a series of progressively responsible assignments. Eventually, John took on the role of directing all international operations, overseeing activities throughout Europe, Asia, and regions south of the equator for the Connecticut-based company.
Leadership at Russell Athletic
Seeking a change to a warmer climate, John joined Russell Athletic in Atlanta. There, he focused on developing long-term retail partnerships within the sportswear business. His expertise led him to expand these business relationships throughout Europe, establishing successful connections in every European country.
College Store Division Leadership
John returned to the United States to take on the role of Vice President and General Manager of the College Store Division at Russell Athletic. In this capacity, he was responsible for developing the college store business and working closely with major universities across the country.
Consulting and Training in Retirement
Upon retirement, John remained active in the industry by consulting with the National Association of College Stores (NACS). He conducted retail training seminars in several states and participated in regional meetings across the USA. As he described it, this phase allowed him to return to the essentials of “Retail 101.”
Family and Legacy:
John will be deeply missed by his children and extended family: Ross (Lynda) McMeekin, Trish Bradley, Laura (Jerry) Resh, and Carolynn (Michael) Puffe. He leaves behind his grandchildren Andrew, Victoria, and Natalia McMeekin; Brittany Catron; Taylor and Zach Resh; Jack and Connor Bradley; and Alex and Mallory Puffe.
