John Walter Schubert

John W. Schubert, aged 79, passed away on August 24, 2026. He was born on December 2, 1946 to John D. Schubert and Jimmie Nell McGee Schubert in Tunica, MS. John was a beloved husband to Cynthia Knox Schubert for 53 years.

John was known for his deep devotion to his family and unwavering commitment to those he believed in. He was an intensely private man with strong traditional values, whose drive for creating a better life for those he loved was at the heart of his personal and professional success.

An incredible athlete from a young age, John was an All American Athlete in three sports at Tunica County High School in Tunica, MS. The football field was where he shined; he was recruited by multiple Division I colleges. After turning down an offer from the legendary Bear Bryant, John committed to Mississippi State University where he played for the bulldogs until an injury ended his time on the field. Shortly after graduating from college, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Vietnam (1970-1971) earning a Bronze Star Medal. He was proud of his service to our country, though he kept his experiences private.

A career in the insurance industry is how he made his mark. He got his start at James S. Kemper Insurance in Atlanta, GA. He honed his skills at Caroon & Black, which became Willis Insurance in Atlanta, before breaking out on his own. In 1992, he founded Southern States Insurance, Inc. which he grew to include 7 locations across 2 states. In 2001, John welcomed his son, Jim into the agency where they worked together for 15 years before John transferred ownership of the company over to Jim.

A forever athlete, he spent most of his free time as an adult playing various sports and competing in numerous tournaments. He was a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club for 40 years where he played both golf and tennis competitively. Tennis was where he excelled, even winning the Pro-AM at the US Open.

A convert to the Catholic Church later in life, John was a weekly attendant with his family at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Johns Creek, GA. He was also a proud supporter of multiple charities including Insure the Cure (The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation) and St. Jude’s.

Above all else, his family was his pride. Any conversation with John would reveal his love and devotion to his family. He loved to tell stories of his son and grandchildren as well as the trips he and Cindi took throughout their marriage. He shared all of these stories with his sister, Marinelle on their weekly phone calls.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Cindi, son, James E. (Meghan), grandchildren Oliver J., Marin K. and Molly I. (Alpharetta, GA) as well as his sister, Marinelle Broadway (Belzoni, MS). He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jimmie Nell.

A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 31, 2026 at 11 AM at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Johns Creek, GA to celebrate John's life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to either The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Hospital in memory of John W. Schubert.
