Born on May 6, 1952, in Birmingham, Alabama, Johnny was the son of the late James and Elsie Leathers. Johnny graduated from Samford University, where he was a dedicated member of the football team—a game he loved and carried with him throughout his life. He cherished sharing stories from his playing days and was an enthusiastic fan, always cheering for both the Samford Bulldogs and the University of Alabama Crimson Tide.
He was married to the love of his life, Lisa Leathers, for 55 wonderful years. Together, they built a beautiful family, becoming the proud parents of three children: Trish, Tina, and Johnny Jr. He was a deeply proud, wise, and kind father and husband, whose warmth and sense of humor brightened every room. Sadly in 2000, at just 21 years old, Johnny Jr passed away. He stayed close to his father’s heart everyday. Johnny is also survived by his brother, Edward.
A dedicated and hard worker, Johnny enjoyed a long and successful professional career. He spent over 30 years at DuPont before retiring from IBM as a consultant at the Pentagon.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored if you would consider making a donation to The Wayne Leathers Memorial Fund created through the Samford University Football Program — a tribute to Wayne’s deep love for both his Savior and the sport that shaped so much of his life.
