Kathleen “Kathy” Mary Maloney passed away peacefully following a long battle with cancer on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at her home in Marietta, Georgia. Kathy was born June 20, 1941, in Jamaica, Queens, NY to Arthur and Mary Zerrener. Artie was a career New York Firefighter and Mary kept home and did secretarial work. Kathy grew up in the vibrant community of Jamaica, attending Catholic schools and forging lifelong friendships. She graduated from Our Lady of Wisdom High School in 1959 and began her studies at Queens College, where she met the love of her life and husband of 61 years, Geoffrey Maloney. She graduated with honors with a BS in Home Economics and followed with an MS from Hunter College.
Following a storybook college romance, Geoff proposed on the steps of the courthouse in front of Truth and Justice, and to his great joy, she accepted. Geoff and Kathy married on October 12, 1963. She taught in the NY City Schools until, in 1965, her most important job of mother began with the birth of the first of her four sons. She was a wonderful mother and then grandmother for every minute of her life thereafter.
Geoff’s work brought them from New York to Marietta, Georgia, in 1978. There, they and their sons became active members in East Cobb, especially in various sports communities and at Holy Family Catholic Church. Kathy was a champion tennis player and golfer at Chattahoochee Plantation, Olde Town and Indian Hills Country Clubs; an active member of several social and investment clubs; the President of Chattahoochee Plantation Women’s Club and Investment Club; and a ranked Bridge player for over 30 years, frequenting the Atlanta Country Club and local duplicate bridge clubs.
On any given weeknight or weekend, you could find her cheering on her sons’ sports teams and later those of her grandchildren. Whether it was baseball, basketball, swimming, or lacrosse, Kathy was all-in supporting her children and grandchildren. Kathy and Geoff were active volunteers for MUST Ministries, Shepherd’s Inn, Georgia Works and other assorted charities. As the beloved matriarch of the Maloney family, she hosted cherished Sunday dinners for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Geoff; her four sons, Jim, Bill (Teddy), Tom
and Kevin (Venda); her five grandchildren, Kelsey, Em, Grace, Sam and Brady; and a
large and loving extended family and friends including Patty, Kate, and Susan. She was a gift from God to all who loved her. The family is especially grateful to Wellstar’s Northwest Georgia Oncology Team who aided Kathy in extending her life through great care and lifesaving treatments for metastatic breast cancer for sixteen years.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Wellstar Foundation, which provides aid to improve the care of all Georgians, https://foundation.wellstar.org/
Service will be held at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Marietta, Georgia, on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at 11:00 am, followed by a reception in the church hall.
