Lanny was born on September 22, 1942 in Macon, Georgia to Wilburn H. and Julia Malone Hill.
Lanny was a loving husband to his wife, Pat for almost 46 years. Lanny was a loyal and loving brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend. Lanny’s loving presence will be forever missed, but his influence and legacy will be a lasting one through all who knew him.
Lanny had a highly successful 28-year career with UPS. He spent 2 years in study at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia and then moved to Atlanta. It was there that he attended Georgia State University and double-majored in Business and Management.
Lanny started his career at UPS as a Supervisor, but held several positions through his years there. Lanny Hill rose to District Customer Service Manager, in which he travelled across the country to set up hubs. To say Lanny Hill was instrumental in establishing UPS with a reputation of excellence in customer service and the logistics giant that UPS is today would be an understatement. Lanny’s career there began in 1967, and he retired in 1995, at which time Pat and Lanny moved to Atlanta, closer to home.
Lanny was a man of integrity, wisdom, generosity, passion and zeal, which drove him to excellence in all he did.
Lanny was an active member of First Redeemer Church for 21 years, where he served as an Ordained Deacon. Among the many roles he held as a Deacon, Lanny led the Baptism ministry where he enjoyed serving and celebrating with families as they followed in Believer’s baptism, which gave him great joy. It was Lanny’s desire to see as many people as possible enjoy the same personal relationship with Christ that he had, which drove Lanny in his service to others. He was a strong Christian man with a steadfast faith, which he lived out daily.
Lanny served on the Board of There’s Hope for the Hungry (where he also volunteered regularly) and There’s Hope America.
Lanny and Pat loved to travel together, where their destinations were most often sunny beaches. Lanny was also a great tennis player as a young man and played ALTA tennis.
Lanny truly enjoyed working in his yard, where his meticulous nature was on full display.
He held a special place in his heart for the Georgia Institute of Technology, especially the football and basketball programs. Lanny and Pat on a Saturday afternoon would often have friends accompany them to Grant Field for Georgia Tech Football. His love for Georgia Tech and support for the University will remain in the legacy of the Pat and Lanny Hill Endowed Athletic Scholarship.
Lanny Hill would want us to know that the promise of God found in Hebrews 13:5 “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” meant much to him.
Lanny Hill is survived by his wife of 45 wonderful years, Pat Maddox Hill.
He is also survived by his sister, Arden Hill Grace and husband, Larry from Macon, Georgia; brothers, Rick Hill and wife, Carol of Blairsville, Georgia and Benny Hill and wife, Roe of Dawsonville, Georgia; brother-in-law, Allen Maddox and wife, Cathy of Smyrna, Georgia, and sister-in-law, April Schaps of Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
