Marion Schatell, aged 89, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. She was born on April 16, 1936, to Abraham “Al” and Pauline (Kirschenbaum) Fleischman in New York City. She and her older brother, Jerry, whom she idolized, were raised in Weehawken, New Jersey. She spent the past 70 years living in Rutherford, New Jersey, Lanesville, New York, and Phoenix, Arizona.
Marion was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to so many. She was known for her warm heart, quick wit, and caring soul.
She loved the arts. She was an accomplished actress in community theater and an artist with a God-given talent for painting. Her artwork will be cherished by her family forever. She adored the theater, music, ballet, opera, and movies. She loved creating meals and, most of all, spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed trips to the casino, playing mahjong, and a good Scotch on the rocks.
Throughout her life, Marion achieved many accomplishments in the workplace. She graduated from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, followed by a successful career as a textile artist in New York City. No one had as keen and creative an eye for art or for color as Marion.
She will be especially missed by Herbie, her husband of nearly 70 years. She is also survived by her son, Ed, and daughter-in-law, Diane Schatell; grandchildren Allison (Schatell) and her husband, Chris Gammel; Gregory Schatell and his wife, Grecia; Stephanie (D’Ulisse) and her husband, Matt Lamar; and Kevin Schatell. She will be greatly missed by her five great-grandsons, Sutton, Shepard, Grady, Ford, and Brandt Gammel, who lovingly called her GiGi. Sadly, Marion was predeceased by her daughter, Wendy (Schatell), and son-in-law, Leo D’Ulisse.
Marion was cremated and will be laid to rest with Herbie upon his passing. We will announce a suggested charitable foundation at that time.
