89, of Picayune MS, previously of Roswell GA, went home to our Lord on August 31st, 2015 in Carriere, MS. She was born in Decatur, AL on April 14th, 1926 to Cole and Pearl Holesapple. Her education included a B.A. in Retail Economics earned at the University of Montevallo in 1948, a Masters in Education in 1978 from the University of GA (Athens) and Education Specialty degrees in both 1980 & 1981 from GA State University. Her work career began early in life, as a grocery bagger at Hargroves in small-town Decatur, moving up to a buyer of Children's Wear for Davidson's of Atlanta (now Macy's) and worked for several years in the Antique department of Atlanta's Rich's department store.
Our “Betty” was one of the charter members of the Roswell Women's Club. She assisted the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, serving on their scholarship committee as well as helping out on the Education committee (among others) of the Roswell Presbyterian Church where she became a member in 1964 when she moved to Roswell with her husband Rock. She was active in the community of Roswell, volunteering at the polls on election days, a past president of her neighborhood group, a co-leader for a Camp Fire Girls group and an avid player of bridge. Her smile, which could put anyone at ease and lit up whole rooms will not be forgotten and will be sorely missed.
Mrs. Callender was a fixture in the Fulton County school system, in DECA and Marketing beginning at MD Collins High School in College Park GA in 1977 and retiring from her beloved Roswell High in 1992.
She earned the nickname of “Mouse” while dating her soul-mate Rock, who was her beloved spouse for 59 years until his death in 2011. She is also predeceased by her son Tim, who passed in 2014. She is survived by one daughter, Constance, two granddaughters, Ashley and Erin and four great-grandchildren, Michael, Hailey, Matilde, and William.
A small graveside service will be held on Sunday September 27 at 2pm at Green Lawn Cemetery (Roswell Funeral Home), 950 Mansell Road, Roswell GA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made earmarked to the 2nd Mile for Mission by way of the Roswell Presbyterian Church. (www.roswellpres.org/2ndmile).
