Mary Frances Lewis Dunson was born in Clearwater, Florida on August 8,1937 to Arthur and Dessie Mae (Washington) Lewis. Unfortunately, her mother passed away when she was 3 years old and her grandmother, Frances Lewis helped raise her and her younger siblings for several years. Her family later moved to Washington DC and her father remarried Della Hamilton. "Ma Della" as she was affectionately known was instrumental in her youth and young adulthood.
Mary accepted Christ at a young age and her family was actively involved with First Seventh Day Adventist Church in Washington, DC. At church, she served in the Youth Ministry and later sang in the Sanctuary Choir.
She attended elementary school at First Seventh Day Adventist Academy and later graduated from Margaret Washington High School in 1955. While in High School, she was active on the Debate Team. During her Junior Year, she was the only African American Student to receive the esteemed "Oratorical Award" at the Washington DC Chamber of Commerce. Mary attended DC Teachers College from 1955-1957. She received an Associate Degree in Nursing and worked as an LPN at Prince Georges Hospital in Prince Georges, Maryland from 1957-1959.
In June 1959, she married Robert Edward Dunson and moved to Chicago, Illinois. After moving to Chicago, she continued her nursing career as an LPN at Englewood Hospital. She later attended Olive Harvey Junior College in Chicago and obtained her certification in Social Work. She transitioned to a career as a Social Worker and was employed by the Cook County Department of Public Aid from 1961-1982. While there, she was actively involved with New Employee Training, Employee Relations and Nursing Home Services. She enjoyed her work in helping others. She received numerous commendations for her work and was promoted to Senior Caseworker.
As a devoted Mother and Wife, she was actively involved in all aspects of her family life. She and Bob traveled together and shared many wonderful occasions with family and friends. She was always encouraging her daughters to achieve success in their chosen careers while being well rounded in their personal interests. Hence, she was the amazing Swim Team Mom, Ballet and Dance class chauffer, Piano coach, Travel agent and Debutante Ball Coordinator. She was an active member of the PTA and was a founding member of the Corliss HS Science Department Parents Organization. She was passionate about children and became "Mama Dunson" to many others whom she adored and cared for as her own.
In 1987, Mary retired to Orlando, Florida. She became an active member at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. With her experience in Senior Care services, she worked with Orlando Mayor Hood and her mayoral team, to assist and support Senior Ministry Services at many churches in Orlando, Florida. She actively chaired the Senior Ministry service at her home church at Mount Pleasant MB Church. She served in other community leadership activities including founding a Neighborhood Block Club Association.
In 1997, Mary and Bob moved to Lawrenceville, Georgia and then relocated to Milton, Georgia in 2015. They were members of St. James United Methodist Church in Alpharetta, Georgia. They were actively involved with their Daughters and Grandsons. Mary cherished her beloved grandsons and was a dedicated Grandmother. She imparted great wisdom and love to them and leaves an amazing legacy.
Mary is survived by her wonderful Husband of 62 years, Robert Dunson; her 2 daughters, Shelley Monique Dunson (Allen) and Robin Denise Dunson; her son in law, Dwight Franklin Allen and her 3 grandsons, Alexander Keith Benton, Dwight Franklin Allen II and Nicholas Christian Allen; her step granddaughters McCall Allen and Morgan Allen; her sisters, Elizabeth Hundley and Alberta Loftis; her brother, Nathaniel (Geraldine) Lewis; her Goddaughter, Kayla Chavis and a host of nephews, cousins, and friends.
The Visitation will be on Thursday, February 25, 2021 from 6p. – 8p. at Roswell Funeral Home in Roswell, Georgia. A small family in-person funeral is scheduled for Friday, February 26, 2021 at 1p. at Roswell Funeral Home, however space is limited. For all those who would like to attend, the family has asked that you RSVP at zcon1999@gmail.com.

Bob, Shelley, Robin,
I will always remember how gracious Mary and Bob were when we came to Chicago to attend the Helena Friends Club Dances. I will always remember my first introduction to cruising, when we cruised with Mary for her family’s family reunion.
I will always remember Mary for her graciousness and calm serenity.
I know it’s hard right now, but you all have some beautiful memories I pray that they will help you through this.
Love always,

Such sad news to find out about Mrs. Dunson. I have so many wonderful memories of the two of us laughing together during the planning of Robin’s wedding and Shelley’s wedding. She was so easy to talk to about anything. I will miss her beautiful smile and warm personality.

Cousin Mary was funny at times. I spent the night at their house when I was about 7 I think.
Robin and I were up watching Saturday night tv. I told Robin to change the change the channel because there was an adult soap opera coming on that I wanted to see called Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.
Cousin Mary came flying in the room and in that high pitch voice yelled, "No ma'am you are not watching that over here. Lord to peak!! Does your mom let you watch that at home?"
I replied yes, and she said well you are not watching it here. She turned the channel and said if either of you change the channel it will be lights out, Lord to Peak!!"

To my cousins, The Dunson Family
Offering sincere condolence on your loss.
Life is like a mist, appears for just a day,
then disappears tomorrow.
All that we are can quickly fade away,
replaced with tears and sorrow.
But if a man should die, can he live again?
Job 14:14, 15.
Friends of our God, though they pass away,
will never be forsaken.
All those asleep who in God’s mem’ry stay,
from death he will awaken.
Then we will come to see all that life can be:
Paradise Eternally!

I’ve been struggling to find the words to express how I felt about Aunt Mary, whatever comes to mind always seems inadequate but I will try.
My favorite memory is Aunt Mary telling me often how much I looked like her, even more than her own daughters, sorry Shelly and Robin I have a heavy dose of those Lewis genes (LOL). She would often encourage me to move to Atlanta she thought I would be happier and closer to her. She would tell me I’ll work on your Dad I’m on your side but I won’t tell him that I’ll just tell him let her go, don’t worry I’ll look out for her. All the while we plotted in secret (lol).
We had too many conversations that started with “I think about you all the time...I need to call more often.” While I’m grateful I saw her the other year, I’ll always regret that I didn’t get to Atlanta to visit with her like I promised. I’m reminded time is a gift that should never be squandered. I’ll miss you Aunt Mary and I pray that one day we will meet again.
I love you Uncle Bob, Shelly and Robin and pray for your peace continually.

My fondest memories are absolutely the many holiday celebrations/game nights and the warm motherly love I constantly received. I am so blessed to have had her love and support. She was the epitome of what a mom is. Too many memories to name, but all filled with laughter and love.

When Someone You Love Dies... Can They Really Live Again?
The Bible Says “There Is going to be a resurrection.”
“Since death is through a man (Adam), resurrection of the dead is also through a man (Jesus Christ). For just as in Adam all are dying, so also in the Christ all will be made alive.” -1 Corinthians 15:21, 22.
What can that mean for you and family? A Real Hope of being united with your dead loved ones. - John 5:28,29.
May (Jehovah) the God of tender mercies and all comfort be with you and family in (all) your trials.
Love you more,
Your cousin, Earleatha & Family

To Bob, Shelley and Robin: Kenneth and I would like to express our gratitude to each of you, for sharing your beloved Mary with us. I'm confident that fond memories of Mary will bring many smiles to us all, in the days to come. The history of our families coming together, in Chicago, was divinely orchestrated by God, through two kind-hearted souls who nurtured and cherished each other's friendship for many years. God truly blessed Mary and Eddie Ray. Now, we can rest assured that these two wonderful mothers will continue their eternal friendship and sisterhood - time without end.
O, Happy Day! God's Peace, Love and Comfort to you all. Your brothers always, Reese and Ken

To Uncle Bob, Shelly, Robin and Family,
I would like to express my deepest sorrow and condolences for your lost.
For me, Aunt Mary will truly be missed, she was like a second mother.
We shared so many memories as a family such as, numerous times they would travel to Washington DC and Maryland to visit, the many family reunions we all attended and the visits to Chicago.
One memory the Bahamas trip, Robin and I got caught by Uncle Bob and Aunt Mary , we were winning Rum Punch drinks playing volleyball in the pool. (Mind you we were young)
Next, the drive from Florida to Chicago, where me and uncle Bob ate up all the mangoes on the way back, we only left two in the bag, the bag was full, aunt Mary was was upset but, we laughed about it later.
Next, the seafood dinner, the four of us set down to eat, everything smelled good, knowing I’m allergic to fish, I didn’t eat that but, my uncle asked me if I had ever tried frog legs, I said no he stated try one so, I did , you know the old saying it taste like chicken, to make a long story short, I broke out in hives and aunt Mary got so scared she stated boy I can’t send back home looking like that your mother (her sister) is going to kill me. We laughed because it when away the next day.
Lastly, the most heart felt memory is when aunt Mary and uncle Bob drove from Orlando to Tampa to St. Joseph Woman’s Hospital to see and hold my newborn baby daughter Dominique Hundley.
Aunt Mary this is not goodbye but, I will see you when I get there.
I Love You Much
Auntie

To Bob, Shelley, and Robin the rest of the family and friends I just want to convey my condolences. I remember when Mary was a little girl she liked to follow me whenever I would go places, we would go out and pick fruit she loved to follow behind her brother. I loved her very much and I still do. And I love her children, her grandchildren and Bob and his family. I remember when I went to Chicago one time and Shelly was a small girl and Robin was a toddler and I met Bob’s family and it was love, love, love; they loved Mary and Mary loved them it made me so happy to see my sister had them in her life. When she lived in Orlando I met some of her friends and I remember we used to talk about what we did in the church and she and Bob was involved in community service and me and my wife Geri, was involved in community service in my church in New Jersey. That’s what we talked about the most love for family, love for God, love for one another. I’m gonna miss her, I’m gonna miss her very much and yet I do believe that there is a hope that if I live right and I do things that are right that God will give me the privilege and allow me to see my loved ones again and that includes Mary. Bob you are my last brother standing and Shelly and Robin and the grandsons, I love you all. In closing the Lord bless you all and keep you, the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you the Lord lift up his countenance upon you. The Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. Now henceforth and forevermore. Amen.

One of my most happiest and memorable times spent with Aunt Mary was at a girls evening out!!! I think it may have been in 2009. Aunt Mary and Aunt Dorothy came to visit the family in Washington, DC. My two sisters living in DC, Tammy, Julie and I were elated! We invited all of my aunts to dinner and cocktails at Julie’s house. The evening was awesome, Aunt Mary, Aunt Dorothy, Aunt Berta and Aunt Liz came to dinner. We started the evening with great music (Tammy DJ’d), cocktails (alcohol/non alcoholic) and chatter, girls talk. Then we had dinner and desert. It was awesome spending an evening with my aunts while listening to them share their wisdom. Such classy and sophisticated ladies. I am so grateful..... I have included a photo of Aunt Dorothy and Aunt Mary at the girls evening out.

Hello all,
In addition to the warmth and kindness of Mrs. Dunson ‘s spirit, were those FANTASTIC, fluffy, and flavorful pork chops she was always happy to make for us to enjoy! Whenever I knew she was coming in town to visit I always prompted Robin to ask her to pleassssse prepare those chops while they were going to be in town! Mrs. Dunson always obliged and seemed to revel in our enjoyment of one of her signature dishes! Additionally, Mr. & Mrs. Dunson’s open arms and genuine spirit is what I will always remember about them as a couple. They always made me feel welcome and a part of the family. For that I am grateful! 🙏🏾🙏🏾

Goodbye Friend,
I missed you and Bob terribly when you moved from the subdivision, but thought of you often. I will remember your kindness and classy persona. You inspired an "old tomboy" to be a little more lady like.
I loved hearing you talk about your girls and your grandsons. You had so much love in your heart for them, I was inspired once again. I learned that you must create your own community and family. You and Bob were that to JB and me.
Until we meet again, friend, rest in peace.

My Auntie Mary was not only an aunt, she was my friend. I remember talking to her for hours. She would call me everyday, even at my office. I knew when she called, it was always a long conversation. I am so sorry to hear about Ms. Dunson's passing. She was so instrumental in making me the person that I have become> She was truly, I believe, my personal angel. I am so very saddened that I cannot pick up the phone to call and hear her voice, but at the same time joyful that she was such an influential part of my life for as long as she was. All she had to do was say my name and I instantly knew everything was going to be okay. This world, "my world" was a better place, just because she was here. She will be missed beyond imagination. Thank you Shelly and Robin, for sharing

Mary Dunson was like my big Sister🥰, especially during our time together in Orlando. It was truly a sad day when Mary and Bob moved from Orlando to Atlanta, but I know the move was the best thing for them. My husband, Roy, owned an old truck that looked like it was on it’s “last leg”. Here is the story:
Mary: Lera Paul your husband should get a new truck because that truck looks bad in the neighborhood .
Me: I know Mary, but Roy loves that truck so I can’t do anything about that.
Approximately two weeks later, I arrived home from work and I see someone driving the truck and it’s not my husband because he is working in the yard.
Me: Who is driving your truck?
My husband: Mary used the truck to go to pick up a large package from the Post Office.
Me: Whaaaat!!!
When Mary returned, I asked her about driving the truck since it was raggedy.
Mary: Lera Paul, that’s our truck because I needed to get my package. 😂😂😂. Mary Dunson will get the job done, and she was our Queen on Breezewind Drive, Orlando. I will truly miss her...Heaven definitely has received another beautiful ANGEL 😇

Heartfelt sympathy and much love to you all, as you go through this time of grief.
My daughter (Lenita) called today with the sad news of the death of your wife /mother the news came as a shock. There isn't much one can say to ease your sense of loss, but I want you to know my thoughts are with you in this time of sorrow.
May a lifetime of wonderful memories give strength to you and the family in the days ahead.
Please accept my deepest sympathy.

My deepest condolences to the family of Mary Dunson. She was such a beautiful gracious lady with a warm friendly outgoing personality. An outstanding matriarch to her family. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
It was a pleasure knowing Mary. She was a treasure that will be missed.
