On March 15, 2015 Mary Margaret (Whalen) McMickle passed from this world. Mary was born in 1959 in Cleveland, Ohio as the seventh of nine children of Marge and Bill Whalen of Ashtabula, Ohio. Mary grew up in Tampa, Florida and graduated from the Academy of the Holy Names High School. She went on to St. Mary’s College in South Bend, Indiana where she obtained a degree in accounting and also studied for a year abroad in Maynooth, Ireland. After graduation she moved to Houston, Texas where she met her future husband, J.T. McMickle.
Mary will be remembered for her strong Christian faith and Catholic upbringing and her service to the Catholic Church. She was a product of 16 years of Catholic education and was very active in volunteering, having served in the ministry for the poor for St. Andrew Catholic Church in Roswell, Georgia. It was there that Mary offered pro-bono accounting services for the poor and elderly and served food at the downtown mission. At her previous parish of St. Bonaventure in Davie, Florida she was practically an institution, leading many initiatives for the school, including a math enrichment program for grade-schoolers.
Her joy was her family, especially her three children, Robert, Michael and Maggie, and she took an active interest in their faith and education. Her happiest times were when she could spend time visiting with them or watching them in their activities, be it sports or music. She was a kind, gentle and humorous person who was nice to everyone she met. There was not a hint of malice or anger in her and she was universally liked by everyone. She made friends easily and was a friend to everyone. Mary never took herself too seriously and always put the needs of others in front of her own.
She was employed for the past 16 years as a certified forensic accountant and CPA by Kapila Makumal LLC of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There she worked tirelessly in helping expose high profile financial fraud and returning sour investments to the neediest of investors.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Marge and Bill Whalen and her brother, William. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, J.T. McMickle of Roswell, Georgia; three wonderful children: Robert of Los Angeles, California, Michael of Tallahassee, Florida, and Maggie of Roswell; seven of her siblings: Catherine Whalen of Smyrna, Georgia, Michael Whalen of New Orleans, Louisiana, Patrick Whalen of San Antonio, Florida, Thomas and Sean Whalen of Tampa, Florida, Kevin Whalen of Orlando, Florida and Rose Jonson of Portsmouth, Virginia; and 26 nieces and nephews.
Mary’s productive and wonderful life was cut short by an aggressive form of liver cancer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the St. Vincent de Paul Society for St. Andrew Catholic Church of Roswell, 675 Riverside Drive, Roswell, Georgia, 30075 or the American Cancer Society.
The funeral services will be held at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 675 Riverside Drive in Roswell on Wednesday, March 18th at 10:30 am. Family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, March 17 from 7 pm to 9 pm at the Roswell Funeral Home at 950 Mansell Road in Roswell.
