Mavis was born on July 13, 1928 in St. Catherine, Jamaica, the daughter to the late Ernest Chung and Victoria Wood-Chung.
Mavis moved to Kingston JA as a young adult, where she married Lloyd Burgess and raised a family.
The marriage was blessed with three children, Marjorie, Trevor, and Wilbert.
An avid reader and a lover of nature, Mavis kept tropical fish, studied genetics to attain desired traits in the birds she bred, and you could always find her tending to her beautiful orchid collection.
A lifelong learner, she took classes in cake decorating and was successful in making cakes for all occasions. Cooking was her passion, as she loved having family and friends around. Her chicken in a drum was legendary.
She took classes in business to help her become a successful businesswoman, and classes in nursing that helped her as a volunteer in the hospital caring for and comforting new babies.
Mavis had a knack for connecting with people and she touched many lives. She knew how to pool resources and apply them to help people. Her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her.
Along with her parents, Mavis is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Burgess, her grandson Trevor Jack Burgess and her five siblings. She is survived by her three loving children: daughter, Marjorie Burgess, of Homestead, Florida; son, Trevor Burgess (Telia), of Holly Springs, Georgia; son, Wilbert Burgess (Barbara), of Orlando, Florida; grandchildren, Timothy Burgess, Terrance Burgess, Melanie Serrano, Tyrone Burgess, Wilbert “Wilby” Burgess; 12 great-grandchildren and many friends.
