Nancy Lee Oxford, 92, died 9 March 2022, with family by her side in Milton, Georgia. She was born on January 9, 1930 in Atlanta at St. Joseph’s Hospital to Ruth Harper Tabb and Richard Lee Plowden. She was the first in her family to graduate from college, and then later earned a Masters in Library Media at Georgia State University. She devoted her career to public service, educating children in the Atlanta Public School system both as a teacher and library media specialist for forty years. Her greatest love, however, was her family.
An only child, Nancy Lee in her own words had both a challenging and spoiled childhood. During her formative years, she lived through The Great Depression and shortly thereafter World War II; she was, however, fortunate to be sheltered from many of the struggles others faced as her parents ensured she had many fond memories. Her happiest visions of childhood include riding the Atlanta cable cars to have tea at Rich’s Atlanta Tea and shop at JP Allens with her mother, as well as crabbing at Myrtle Beach with her father. She became “famous” (in her words) when her father gifted her a pet fox and she was featured in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution for having such an unusual pet. She would later nurse to health a baby squirrel, bottle feeding him and sneaking him into restaurants and movies in her pocket. Nancy Lee’s precociousness extended into her adulthood endeavors in which she was alway busy traveling, entertaining (or being entertained), going to bible study, playing bridge, nurturing her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and in all circumstances being the classiest, best accessorized lady in the room.
Her immense love burgeoned from her childhood and the closeness of the many friends and family who loved her; we all, too, grew from her affection. To know Nancy was to know a woman who loved life. She is survived by her sons Dan Oxford of Roswell and Steven Oxford of Cumming; daughter-in-law Debbie Oxford (McConville); grandson Todd Oxford of Roswell; grand-daughters Rebecca Oxford-Bennett, Kaitlyn Oxford, Hailee Oxford; and five great grandchildren (Lilee, Daegan, Holt, Gavin, and Knoxx). She is preceded in death by her mother Ruth Harper Tabb, father Richard Lee Plowden, and daughter-in-law Judy Oxford (Menchion).
A woman of tremendous faith, Nancy Lee attended Dunwoody Baptist Church for over fifty years and was an avid participant and leader in women’s bible studies. Here she developed many of her lifetime friends whom she considered an extension of her family.
Please join us in celebrating her life Friday afternoon 18 March 2022 at 2PM and receiving friends and guests at 1:30PM near the North Entrance.
