Mrs. Norma Sutton Van Buren (Nonie), age 91, of Cumming, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 surrounded by her family. Nonie was born on September 26, 1929 in Tignall, Georgia, a daughter to the late William Norman Adams and Nina Tabor Adams.
Nonie attended the University of Georgia where she received a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics and a minor in Science. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and a loyal alumnus of her university. During her time at UGA, Nonie met her soon to be husband, Mr. Claude B. Sutton Jr., ‘Ben’, the two married shortly after graduation and shared thirty-nine wonderful years together.
During her early married life Nonie was a homemaker and stayed very busy caring for her three children. After her husband Ben retired from the military they owned a business in Atlanta – Stretch & Sew and Atlanta Sewing Center for twenty- two years. Nonie taught thousands of people to sew and inspired them with fashion shows and unique sewing ideas given two times each year. Her incredible talent allowed her the opportunity to design and make shirts for the University of Georgia mascot, “UGA” and her Daughter still makes them. Nonie and Ben had incredible success with their business and even after retirement they still found ways to remain in the sewing industry. Unfortunately, Ben passed away in 1990 and it was during that time Nonie’s faith in God grew even stronger than ever before.
Knowing Nonie meant knowing a woman who had an unwavering love for Jesus and her church. Nonie was active during her life in the Presbyterian Church where she served as elder plus many other areas of responsibility in her church such as teaching, serving as Moderator of Pres. Women, was also on staff for 3 years, and organized the sewing of children’s choir robes.
Eventually Nonie met Mr. William Van Buren and the two fell in love. They married shortly thereafter and shared seventeen years together living in Austin, Texas. Following his passing Nonie made her way back to Georgia to be closer to her three children and their families.
Until her last breath on this earth Nonie remained a bold and steadfast woman of God, an outstanding mother, a precious grandmother and a loyal friend to many; she will certainly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Nonie is survived by her three children, Ben Sutton, wife Esther, David Sutton, wife Deb, Claudia Warthen, husband Tom; five grandchildren, Trey Warthen, Lindsey Denmark, Jesse Sutton, Abbe Wright, and the late Nathan Sutton; two great grandchildren, William Nathan Wright and Anderson Leigh Denmark; and several extended family members and friends also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Nonie Sutton Van Buren will be held privately by her loving family. Nonie will be laid to rest in the Arlington Memorial Park of Sandy Springs, Georgia.
In lieu of customary remembrances the family request donations be made to some of Nonie’s most beloved charities, St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital, Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, and World Vision.
