To Paul’s family,

I worked for Paul at Iron Mountain. He was a great leader and a caring person - a rare combination that speaks to both his amazing talent and professionalism AND his kind soul. 

I remember Paul arriving in Boston with carefully prepared meals that his wife lovingly made for him, and I could see how loved he was. One on one we spoke often about our children and I remember it was striking just how much caring he had in his heart for his family. My son plays the oboe and Paul would share with me videos of his very talented son playing the saxophone.

It is no surprise that he enjoyed gardening because he was also an avid tender of both kindness and talents.   

I only learned of Paul’s passing this morning and wanted to express my deepest condolences with you for your loss.

I have lost a very good friend and mentor in Paul. I met him when he was at ASC and from a client he became a friend and mentor. 

May his soul rest in peace and his family find solace in the fact that he was a good man.

I am shaken by this terribly sad news. I haven’t seen or heard from Paul for a long time, but I was thinking of him recently. Maybe his spirit paid me a visit...I’d like to think so. He was such a smart, terrific person and always so nice to me. I wish Paul’s family God’s peace and love as they deal with their grief. 

It feels so Surreal to think someone who was so full of life can be taken so prematurely.  Just wish I could turn the clock back and bring you back here.  Miss all the good times we’ve had growing up. You were the source of pride for Periamma and Periappa.  You’ve done all of us, Royappa’s very proud. More than anything I’m comforted by the thought you knew and loved our savior very much and was delighted by your strong faith in him until the very end. We were very comforted by the extreme strength that Emelda, Debbie and Jonathan exhibited under such hard circumstances. Rest sssured, that The almighty that you so fully trusted in, will carry your family through. Though you’ve left a deep void in our hearts, the knowledge that you are right now  walking on golden streets and singing and dancing with The king of Kings brings peace and solace to our hearts. I cherish every conversation, every moment with you Paul. Rest in his blossom until we meet again dear brother.  Emelda, Debbie and Jonathan will always be in our thoughts and prayers and we promise to be there for them.

Dear Emmu athai, Deborah and Jonathan,

I am writing on behalf of the Roopkumar family. We are very sorry to hear about mama's passing. Mom is devastated about the news and she conveyed her deep condolences. Mama was a very kind and loving person and invited Alfred and I home the few times we spoke over phone in the last few months.  Our family  had a wonderful time in your home in 2014, which we will cherish forever for being amazing hosts. You will all be in our prayers and may God comfort and strengthen you all in this time.

I am so sorry to learn of Paul’s passing.  What fond memories I have of your whole family at church on Sunday mornings. I loved hearing about your family’s travels, and about all the wonderful things both Deborah and Jonathan were doing. You have a wonderful family and it shows from such a wonderful set of parents.   

I remember with such fondness seeing Jonathan grow during Sunday School into such a fine young man.  I know your Dad is so proud of you, Jonathan.  Keep the faith and remember your Dad will always be watching over you.

We will never be able to forget Paul's captivating charming personality.
We only met him once over Christmas lunch in Melbourne and he had made a great impact in our lives. All of us are waiting at the airport lounge to board the plane but he has taken an earlier flight, anyways one day we will all be together.

I had the pleasure of working in Pauls’ group at Iron Mountain for many years and reporting to Paul for 18 months when Paul elevated my position within the organisation. I will always be grateful for him believing in me. Paul was able to see and mentor the potential in people….a real people person.

The last time I was in the US and spent time with Paul was in Dec 2017 as a team and again in Jan 2018. Little did I know that would be the last time we would spend time together. As always, it was a pleasure to be in his company. Throughout the last year Paul would always make time to call me, to check-in and see how things were going and if I needed any help or advise….always thinking of others. I will miss that and hearing his voice from England. 

My condolences go out to his family. Thinking of you all at this sad time.

'Look how beautiful the world is", were your words in the hospital looking out the window. I have never or will ever see a person with so much charisma and appreciation for even little things in life. I thank you for coming into our lives, making us feel special and letting us be with you during almost all important times of your life in Atlanta. The moments that we have shared over several years are all precious and will be cherished. We know that you were happy and confident that Emelda and the kids will do fine. As you know, we will be there for the kids for all the support they need. Just yesterday, Debbie introduced me as her aunt (not by blood), I will always be your little sister and your partner in crime.

Words seem so feeble in moments like these. Ive known Paul uncle right from my childhood days. He has been my dad's close friend. A person who has risen up to greater heights through his sheer Hardwork, grit and determination. He always looks at the brighter side of life with so much of positivity. I have always seen him as a casual person , extremely down to earth and very optimistic. 
Uncle you have been and will continue to be a real life standing example of how to lead a balanced life and we have always looked up at you.
God can be cruel to us in unfathomable ways. Your loss is extremely painful and unbearable, can never be expressed. I heard through my mom even while you were battling with your life , you were so brave and took life as it comes.

Whenever I spoke to uncle, he would advise me to do a short term course in Landscape architecture in the US and kept insisting the fact that US has so much scope in my field . Uncle you continue to inspire so many people like me for the kind of life you have lead. 

Our heart goes out to Emu aunty , Debbie and Jonathan.i sincerely pray his noble soul finds eternal peace and uncle you will always walk beside us.

Over 15 years ago,  I was asked to make a presentation to my boss’s boss. I went in well prepared hoping to answer all the questions. I walked in to the room to be welcomed by a smiling gentleman - Paul Royappa. As the presentation started, he pressed me for answers. “Your proposal is totally silent on efficiency gains. Next year we will have to spend the same amount of money..” he said. “Operational efficiencies are critical to any business, Mike” - as the rest of the audience was sort of starting to give up.. Paul told me like how an elder brother would advise you. Outside the meeting room, he came and said “your presentation was very good, but bosses always ask questions you never anticipate “.. it was a very valuable piece of advice for my career. Efficiency means you never do the same thing the same way again, he told me. The second one must take less time and resources. If you don’t- you really didn’t learn anything during the second attempt. That was an advice that I carry with me to this day.  I am very thankful to Paul for all that he taught me, and the personal interest he took in my career.  During a Code review once I had found that the author of one of SQL/Shell scripts was none other than Paul himself. When I asked him about it “that was after my life in India, and I have moved on from that life “ he laughed.. Those words are still true today. I believe that Paul has moved on to a better and more beautiful life. His memory will be a blessing for many people - and count it as a blessing to be counted among those people. I do not know Paul’s family, but wanted to let you all know that you will be in our thoughts and prayers - I will always be in debt to Paul - my guru and mentor.

It is hard to describe Paul’s affection towards us, his compassion, love and his endearing relationship as a brother to my wife and brother-in-law to me in words. 

I vividly remember of those wonderful conversations that I had with Paul about the profession and the industry that both of us were associated with.

Despite all the hardship that he underwent, while on treatment, there was an air of positivity during those moments from Paul which speaks volumes about the grit and the sound attitude towards life, family and relationships that Paul had.

It may look dramatic but true when I state that I envied the special bonding between Paul and  my wife, Hannah (Paul's sister)  and the warmth and pouring of love that both reciprocated to each other, which I was deprived of.

Paul touched all our lives in many ways and those strong memories of Paul are alive and fresh still. We believe that he lived far away from us while he was in the US earlier, it is just that he went little farther from us.

Paul Uncle was one of the kindest, affectionate and cheerful person I know. He was incredible mentor because of his extensive experience and immense intelligence. I can never forget his advice about work, growth and life. His biggest positive was his ability to make others trust in themselves. If not for Paul Uncle, I would have never applied for many opportunities. Uncle believed in me when I didn’t.  It is his unwavering optimism and the unbreakable spirit that made him an inspiration. He continues to be an inspiration from Heaven above. His life on earth stands testament to the fact that one can always aspire and accomplish much if we believe in ourselves and work hard.

There is not a moment that has passed by that we haven’t thought about him. He played a big part in our Royappa family. He had the broadest smile and the biggest heart that ever existed among us.
We have shared a lot of fond memories with him and all we are left with now are his memories to cherish. Our hearts wish and pray to God that we can meet him one more time and re-live our childhood days.

Amma fondly remembers the arguments you always used to have with her and at the end of the day she realized you were always right. Your wisdom was unmatched even when compared to my old age. Paul, Amma misses your phone calls and wishes she would hear one “hello amma!” from you one last time.
Hannah misses the special concern and advice you used to give her whenever she felt lonely or lost. In spite of always fighting with you I know that the bond we shared as siblings can never be replaced with anything else in this world.
Johnny deeply misses his partner in crime, all the memories are still fresh. He can never forget the childhood days and the bond shared was never once like brothers but like true best friends. Ten years we both walked to school and all the fun we had through those journeys is irreplaceable in my memories. All the advice you gave me whenever you visited India, I will cherish forever.

I hope you are surrounded by God’s comfort and love during this difficult time. Each day, you and Paul have been in my thoughts and prayers. 

Paul is one of kind and we rarely get to witness and be in the presence of such special spirits. To many people, he is a friend, a mentor, a role model, an angel, a father figure, and above all - an example of what it means to truly live with the heart of Christ and overflow with the love of God.

Paul has always lived and led from a place of understanding and love. He truly cared about the well-being of all those around him. He cared deeply about edifying and elevating others before himself. In many of my conversations with Paul, I often felt I was more like a son than an employee. He provided warmth, comfort, sincerity and positive energy in every situation.

Many of us in this world search for heroes in capes, magical creatures, or angels descending from heaven to help us. We often overlook that angels are always around us. They just happen to be in human forms. Paul was one of those angels that God missed and wanted to be near again. My life and perspective has changed because I was blessed with the opportunity to be with one of God’s angels.

If how we knew him is any reflection of the larger role he played in life - I know he was a great father, a great husband, a wonderful son, and will continue to be a great spiritual leader in our lives.

May God continue to shed his light upon you, give you the strength and comfort you need to rest under his wings.

When we met your husband Paul during our get together on August 5th 2017 in Trichy, none of us thought that it was going to be the first and last meet.  His smile can’t be erased from our minds.  He surprised us with the “luncheon treat”.  In fact we planned for next year’s summer vacation, but God’s plan was different.  

Emelda, Deborah & Jonathan, God does everything for good as Romans 8:28 says.  
May God give you strength and courage to pass through the difficult situation.  You three are always in our prayer.

There are some people in our lives who we would prefer not to associate with, however there are some people who we cannot get enough of. Paul definitely falls in the second category of people.

Paul, Emmu and Jonathan spent the 2017 Christmas with us in Melbourne. The 3 weeks he spent with us was the best Christmas we have ever had in Melbourne.  He made such a huge impact on our lives with his warmth and compassion. What resonated with my family and I most was that he always went out of his way to help others – no matter what. He left Melbourne promising that he would be back wanting to spend more time with us. Unfortunately, God has had a hand in calling him sooner than expected. 

Paul had a wonderful sense of humour which he passed on to anyone who came into contact with him. It is a great testament to his nature that he formed so many long lasting friendships over the years. Even though he is no longer with us today, I know that his legacy will live on in all of us in ways he had touched us. He is such an incredible person who continued to inspire everyone he knew. Paul was such a gentlemen – well-mannered, polite but always quick with a witty remark. In the countless times we spoke to Paul over the phone when he was unwell, he never displayed a sense of defeat – taking everything he went through in stride.

Paul -  The time has come to say thank you for the way you brightened our lives even though God granted you half a life. We will always feel cheated that you have been taken from us so young but we must be grateful that you came into our lives. We want you to know that life without you will not be the same. We love you very much and will miss you more than words can say. Goodbye – I know you are up in heaven now, waving down to us.

Emmu , Deb &  Jonathan – Only time will heal our loss. You can only be proud that he was brought into our lives and we cherished every moment of it. God will give us the strength to move on in life. God bless all of you. 


I had a privilege of working with Paul for 5 years. When I think of him, the first thing comes is his smile and the way he calls me. He was a great inspiring leader, more than that a genuine person. He was always positive, even when he was struggling with illness, he always use to say, "I'm getting there". He never gives up, even on a tough situation. I can say he gave up only once. 

May god give his family all the strength to overcome the toughest time.

Dear Paul - It is hard to imagine that you have moved on leaving behind a legacy that reflects your core values and beliefs.

You changed my life (and many others) in ways that no one can imagine. You were an angel, a god sent that took us to a better place. Your sefless nature of giving is what folks admired the most about you and you never expected anything in return.

The sudden untimely demise of Paul is really shocking. Never expected this. We were school mates from 1972. Still remember going to his home at Subramaniapuram. He always kind, gentle and good hearted. Met him a couple of years back during our classmates reunion. He was his usual self, positive and vibrant, even invited me to U.S.

I was so sorry to hear the sad news.I have lost my old friend who studied with me at American College in Madurai. 
Paul Royappa had intelligence, wit, charm and a caring heart that made him a  great friend. He was a very positive man who always had a smile on his face.

It's hard to say goodbye, especially to someone you've loved and known all your life. 

I will always remember Paul Annan for his warmth and affection and his willingness to help those around him with that beautiful, warm smile of his we have all come to love so much.  His cheerful presence was enough to brighten any family gathering. He really was that spot of sunshine, I'm sure, in the lives of many others too. Emelda is our family friend from Childhood. We met Paul recently for a reunion 2017. His smile and warmth can never be forgotten. We admired his simplicity and humbleness. Praying for his soul to rest in peace. May Christ Jesus strengthen us all at this hour. 

Paul you will be missed!! When we had a one on one chat in Dec 2017, I had no idea that would be the last time I will be seeing you. You were always so cheerful in our team meetings, even though you were battling cancer. You are an inspiration to all of us. May your soul rest in peace. 

I had the honor and pleasure of meeting this wonderful family through teaching Deborah and Jonathan. The love and devotion for their children was evident in Paul and Emelda from the very first day I met them. Getting to know Paul later on, through the musical exploits of Jonathan, provided me with a snapshot of the type of person Paul was- devoted, passionate, proud, steadfast. I will cherish his friendship with me and the love he had for his family. 

Each and every moment,our mind is accustomed to think that you are within us.. Paul appa I can never forget my lovely moments and talks with you. You adviced me a lot on how to grow my children.. You showed more love towards me and Angy.. We have admired your intelligence and interest for  education long long before.I will take all your words u adviced me in our last chat.. You seemed very positive when we spoke last. But now I cling on my Heavenly Father with whole heart without questioning his will.. Hope soon HE will wipe away our grief. 

Paul was a humble, good hearted, compassionate and helping person, whom we can never forget. 

It was a pleasure when I came to know that both of us hail from the same place in India and the experience with him in Madurai is unforgettable. He was always a people oriented person nurturing young talent. Very Inspiring  & lot of learning!!

It was indeed very shocking to hear the passing away of Paul. We know Paul and his family for a long time now. Paul is a very friendly and a kind person who always had a smile on his face. He has raised up a beautiful family.  My thoughts and prayers are with Emelda and the children. May God grant them the strength that they need at this time of their loss and may His comforting presence guide them in the years ahead.  You will always be very fondly remembered Paul.
