Regina Thérèse Asfour, age 76, fought and lost a courageous battle with Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD) - atypical Parkinsonism, after over ten years of fighting the disease. Gina passed peacefully and was surrounded by her loved ones.
The world became a brighter, kinder place on December 2, 1948 when Gina, as she was affectionately known, was born in Cairo, Egypt. God overflowed her spirit with compassion, gratitude and integrity, and Gina poured it out tenfold. Gina attended English Catholic schools in Cairo. She was multi-lingual, versed in English, Italian and Arabic. She was the consummate ballerina and accomplished gymnast from the age of three through high school. Striving for a better future, Gina moved with her family to America and settled in Livingston, NJ. It was there that she met the love of her life, Chaker, who she married in 1976. Until her death, she carried her wedding portrait in her wallet everyday. She was employed by Ciba-Geigy for over fifteen years.
Later in life, Gina and Chaker moved to Alpharetta, GA to be closer to their families and adoring nephews. One of the greatest joys of her life was sitting on the deck with her husband watching the plethora of birds swooping and singing in their backyard. Gina loved her family beach vacations in Alexandria and camping in the Suez Peninsula Red Sea, Egypt, she could spend hours bodysurfing and floating in the emerald waves, walking and collecting seashells. She enjoyed building sandcastles and no task was too big or too small. Her patience was like her hugs: all-encompassing and sincere. Gina’s spirit was unwavering and dependable as her selflessness and the warmth she stoked in her handsome nephews hearts. A picture of Gina appears alongside the definition of devotion, as well as for the words dame, genuine and giving.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and grace.
Egypt folklore dancing was a way for Gina to connect with her family and culture. Gina never knew a stranger; she was there for anyone who may have needed her. Such a good listener, she would hold all your secrets and let you know your thoughts and worries were safe with her. She took care of everyone around her, nurturing them to health, supporting their dreams, or even seeing them through their earthly transitions. Her family could always depend on her love and support and she will be greatly missed.
Gina is survived by her beloved and devoted husband of forty-nine years, Chaker Asfour, of Alpharetta. She leaves to cherish her memories and love, her brother John Shedid of Alpharetta. She leaves behind a compassionate sister-in-law Leila Asfour of Alpharetta. She will be missed by her kindhearted nephews, Justin (Jasmine) Shedid and Adrian “A.J” Shedid, of Roswell and her darling grandniece and grandnephew whom were the light of her life, Lydia Patricia and Kaiden Jay and mourning family Arthur (Janice) Cook of Brunswick, GA. Their hearts swell in grieving Gina, but they take immense comfort knowing she is in Heaven.
Gina was preceded in death by her parents, Habib and Yvonne (née Sabbagh) and sister-in-law, Patricia Lee.
Those who knew her were touched by her love, and she is deeply missed.
