January 15, 1944 – June 5, 2019
thor of The Word For You Today, evangelist, pastor, and teacher – died peacefully in his home on June 5, 2019. He was 75. Bob was born to James and Martha Gass on January 15th, 1944 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Following the sudden death of his father, Martha became a single parent of three young children, raising them on a widow’s pension of only $9 per week. Bob gave his life to Christ at the tender age of twelve, during a special service held by Dr. James McConnell. At thirteen, Bob preached his first sermon, entered fulltime ministry at 18. At eighteen, Bob was given the opportunity to live in the U.S., under the tutorship of Pastor Gordon Magee. He arrived in Houston, Texas in 1962 with two sermons, a briefcase, one suit of clothes, and twenty-five cents in his pocket. Pastor Magee took Bob into his home and mentored and coached him in his communication and preaching skills. Bob’s first church was in the Bay of Fundy, Back Bay, New Brunswick, Canada. He pastored there for two years and then moved to Bangor, Maine to take over a church from a retiring pastor. Upon his arrival, there were approximately 300 families in the church. Bob’s brother, Neil, was the associate pastor, and worked faithfully alongside him. After twelve years the church had grown to over twelve hundred families. Bob and Debby were married in 1991, and in 1994, Bob wrote the first edition of the daily devotional, The Word For You Today, with a print run of 3,500 copies. Today the devotional is in print, on television, radio, and digital platforms all around the world, including the United Kingdom, Africa, Argentina, Australia, Cuba, China, Ecuador, India, Ireland, Mexico, Nepal, New Zealand, and Russia, and currently reaches over 83 million people each day. In addition to his passion for his family and his calling to share God’s Word, Bob and Debby shared a deep passion for the orphans of Romania. They first went to Romania in 1991, and in the last 28 years they built a transition home called The Village of Hope. Through this ministry they have rescued over 5,000 children from the streets, the sex-trade, and orphanages and placed them into loving homes. Bob’s favorite quote and life-long passion was this: The World has yet to see what God can do with a man fully consecrated to Him. By God’s help, I aim to be that man. D.L. Moody Bob is survived by his loving wife Debby; daughter, Kathy Gass Shea, son-in-law, Michael Shea; Son, Neil Gass, daughter-in-law, Jackie Gass; grandchildren Alex Gass, Austin Gass, and Caitlin Shea; brother, Neil Gass, and sister-in-law, Ginny Gass; sister, Ruth Gass Halliday, and brother-in-law, Billy Halliday; nieces Cheryl Halliday and Shannon Wheeler, brother-in-law, Philip Shaw, sister-in-law, Andrea Shaw; Bob’s best friend, Pastor Joe McKelvey, and long-time personal assistant, Tom Lissak. A friend handed me the little booklet WORD FOR TODAY almost 20 years ago as we were leaving a service at St Mary's Church, Ambleside, in Cumbria UK. It has been my travelling companion ever since. I also have the email version and many days l like to think that the devotional is speaking directly to me.
I believe in the Communion of Saints and having prayed for UCB and the writers of WORD FOR TODAY over many years, l continue to pray, but know that BOB GASS have now seen the face of JESUS and heard the "well done good and faithful servant ... " as he joined the Saints and Angels in Heaven.
My sincere sympathy to his family and the entire UCB team. Having myself been bereaved of my beloved husband 8 years ago l know they will miss him but will not "sorrow as those who have no hope". I pray they will continue their service in the Lord and in Bob's memory.
REST IN PEACE BOB GASS ! Meet you there!!

Our late Pastor, David T. Demola, had a one-of-a-kind gift, of bringing in special men & women of God, to speak at our church. One of the greatest greats was Bob Gass. He was totally unique in the Word he would bring. Piercing. On target. Strong, yet gentle. ... And The Word For Today. Devotionals are a dime a dozen. Not The Word For Today. What a gift to the Body of Christ ... And there's the Romanian orphans. You knew in-your-knower, that when you gave there, it was God. I mean that ... Finally, Bob's Irish accent is unforgettably warm. ... ... What a Man of God he was!!! --- John & Gloria McCurdy

Sending condolences to Debby, family and staff. Through over 20 years, i have shared TWFYT with family and friends, church groups and homeless on the streets. I am so thankful for being a part of this amazing ministry and the village of hope in Romania. We praise God for the many years of devotionals that have personally lifted me up day by day. I would take a photo of that day's message and send it to another person to lift them up too. When Bob died on June 5, 2019 it was amazing to see what he wrote on that day : "congratulations on your new location".
God knew his final day and Bob had penned it, many years prior which aligned with his going home. How amazing is our God and how awesome is TWFYT with Bob Gass Ministry. May the Lord bless you Debby and family with love and comfort. May the Lord bless all the staff with encouragement as you continue to carry on the work of the Kingdom. I look forward to the next 10 years of Bob's writings. Thank you for blessing our lives.

I would be ungrateful if I didn't share anything. I remember when I arrived in the UK in 2002 very broken, I read the Word for You Today regularly. Everytime I read it there was a word of encouragement specifically, for the situation I was facing. And that wasn't all, I was able to walk victoriously in the midst of the storm after reading and applying the Word I thought was God breathed. I knew so, because it was always relevant. I give God thanks for his obedience and would like to express my sincere condolences to his family. He will be missed but is definitely in a better place. I lost my mum three days before him and was able to console myself with these same thoughts

To this day, meeting the Gass Family and working with them and their staff as a volunteer , has been one of the top joys of my life! After taping the Breakfast Club programs in Atlanta, we would head to the office in Cobb County for the remainder of the day. I have always remembered that Bob would come to where the volunteers worked ,and made it a point to express his gratitude. .....It was an honor, Bob. .I join my prayers for you, Debby,Tom and family, as you process everything and as you carry on this wonderful legacy.. Hands down Bob is the most exceptional man I know. If asked who is the person that You would say is the most like Jesus.,You guessed it, Bob Gass.
The most wise, inspiring, entertaining, loyal and committed friend I have had ( Along with Debby) I would describe Bob, who has been a dear family friend for over 30 years, as a man who would willingly drop everything & put on his “Gods Wisdom Yoda hat” if need be, to minister or guide me in great times of need. This was not special treatment because we were close, it was because it is WHO HE WAS to the core. There is no doubt in my mind that just as God said to Satan after Satan was basically telling God that his people served him out of obligation & that it was because of the hedge of protection that God had put around his people that prevented Satan from having a fair opportunity to convince them to turn from their God. Gods reply, which showed His great pride and confidence in Job was “Have you considered my servant Job” ? Most of us know the story if we know Bob Gass. God agreed to lowerer the hedge. Satan threw every attack he had in his arsenal against Job. Job lost EVERYTHING and while on the ash heap with nothing he still REFUSED to curse God.I believe God would have bet on Bob😊reread the story. (Bob would love that his Graduation into glory caused those of us who have been close to him and those who have supported his ministry dug deeper into the Word as a result. I personally have heard him say similar things. If I remember correctly once during and interview He made the statement that his goal with the word for today was that he hoped it to be a steppingstone. Hoping once they had read his daily word that it did not stop there but that it was merely a tool to inspire/provoke us all to want to run to the Bible and find out what other great nuggets of truth we did not know. Creating a hunger in us for deeper truth in God’s word. I miss you already my wonderful friend. Carol Hardin
