Sambhu, or Sam, as he liked to be called, was originally from Calcutta, India. He had big dreams, and an extraordinary drive which blazed the trail for him to leave his beloved mother country for Japan. With $20 in his pocket and a full scholarship in hand, he emigrated to Japan for his college education in Industrial Engineering (and knowing Sam, a minor in karaoke). He made lifelong friendships and was enamored by the Japanese culture, as he always held a special place in his heart for Japan.
Upon graduation, Sam moved to Chicago to further his career with the American dream in his eyes. Soon after arriving in Chicago, he met the love of his life Bernadette. In 1974, they married and began a beautiful life together. In 1978, they welcomed their first daughter, Anitra, in the middle of a blizzard no less and thus began their family adventure.
In 1982, Sam, Bernadette and Anitra moved to Roswell, GA, because Sam was told there were no bugs nor allergies in the South (actually his company transferred him to Atlanta). In 1986, they welcomed their sweet Samantha, as they heard two daughters were twice as nice.
Sam spent the entirety of his life working hard in various industries from carbon paper to trains to shoes and loved his work tremendously. He held an absolute joy for his profession and thoroughly enjoyed all of the people he worked with at various companies through the years. He was an active member of BAGA, as it was his way to support a little bit of India and his traditions here in Georgia.
Sam had a zest for travel and if you were lucky enough to spend any time with him, he would happily recount all of his travels. But mainly, Sam was a family man. A rare jewel that would always put his family first and care for them with everything he had.
Sam was funny, endearing, charming, honest, loyal and a natural storyteller. If you needed it, he was the first to give you the shirt off of his back. Bernadette’s father once said, “You will never find a finer man than Sam De.” No truer words have ever been spoken. To know Sam was to love him.
So, thank you to this kind soul for making the paintings of our lives so much richer with your beautiful colors, Sam. This is the mark of a life well lived. Well done, good and faithful servant.
Sam is preceded in death by his beloved wide, Bernadette. He is survived by his daughters Anitra and Samantha De, who will miss their “Gooby” beyond measure. Additionally, he
leaves behind his extended family in India and his numerous friends that he considered family.
Please join his daughters in celebrating his life with an intimate memorial and small reception at the Roswell Funeral Home (950 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA 30076) on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 4:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations in Sam De’s name to VEXAS Foundation for research purposes regarding treatment of VEXAS Syndrome or Emory St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta.
