Scott was born on December 6, 1957, in Newark, Ohio, to Marv and Sandy Smith. His family moved to College Park, Georgia, when he was in middle school, and Georgia would remain his home for much of his life.
A gifted athlete, Scott graduated from Lakeshore High School in 1976, where he excelled at football. He went on to play quarterback at NC State University and was part of the team that won the 1979 ACC Championship. He graduated from NC State in 1981. Football remained an important part of Scott's life, but some of his happiest times around sports came later, when he coached his son's T-ball team and umpired Little League baseball.
Those who knew Scott will remember his sense of humor and the fact that he loved to tease people.
Scott enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved old black-and-white Westerns and war movies, Saturday Night Live, and The Andy Griffith Show. And anyone who knew Scott knew about his lifelong love of SpaghettiOs.
Scott loved being outdoors, especially fishing and panning for gold. He also loved coming home to Ohio for the Fourth of July. Those summer visits became a family tradition, with annual trips to Lake Erie to fish for walleye.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents, Marv and Sandy Smith. He is survived by his sons, Tyler Smith and Conrad Smith; stepson, Hunter Bailey; brother, Gregg Smith; sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and Rod Wilkins; nephews, Ryan (Anne Marie) Wilkins, Patrick (Amanda) Wilkins and Andrew Smith; and niece, Sydney (Danny) Lukatsevich.
Scott’s life took him from Ohio to Georgia, from Friday-night football fields to an ACC championship, and eventually to T-ball diamonds, fishing trips and fourth of July visits home. Those who loved him will remember the athlete, the fisherman and the football player, but just as much, they will remember the brother, father and uncle who loved to laugh and tease, knew his Andy Griffith, ate his SpaghettiOs and always had a place in the family.
A private ceremony will be held by his immediate family to spread his ashes at a location he loved.
