Vernon Richard Sandlin Jr., known to everyone simply as Rick, passed away on Oct. 14th, 2026, in Cumming, Georgia. Born on March 27, 1945, in San Diego, California, Rick lived a full life marked by service, skill, and a great deal of laughter.
At just 17, Rick enlisted in the Air Force before the Vietnam War began. He served valiantly for four years and earned medals for his dedication. After the war, he earned his electrician's license. Over the years, he took on various supervisory roles in maintenance and manufacturing, where he had a gift for mentoring young employees and teaching them the skills they needed to succeed. His electrical know-how made him especially valuable as a supervisor at AT&T in San Diego.
Rick was a man of many passions. He loved fishing, hunting, stained glass work, welding, and more hobbies than most folks could keep track of. Those who knew him remember his kindness, his quick wit, and his wonderful sense of humor. Rick had a way of touching the life of everyone he met.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon R. Sandlin Sr; his mother Ruth Edith Sandlin; and his sisters, Delores and Roberta Sandlin.
Rick is survived by his wife, Susan; his sons, Jason and James Sandlin; his daughter-in-law, Jessica Sandlin; his stepsons Lou and Kristian Salwan; his grandsons, Justin, Kyle, Bryson, and Trey; his great-granddaughter, Serenity; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
