She will be remembered as a loving and kind person, with a quick wit and sense of fun. Virginia was gracious, humble and had a strong independent spirit.
Born in Decatur, Georgia, Virginia graduated from Decatur Girls High, earning a college scholarship to Agnes Scott. Like many others, WWII interrupted her college dreams. After the war, she met W.J. Greenway on a blind date. After they married, he attended the University of Georgia Veterinary School. She worked full-time to support him during their college years in Athens. Every evening she typed his class notes so he would be ready for the next classroom day. Throughout her life she remained an exuberant UGA football fan, traveling to all home and away games with her husband. She never missed a game day, enjoying them always dressed in red!
After her husband established his veterinary practice in Atlanta, she was the backbone of their business, managing all office matters. With her husband, she was very active in the Georgia Veterinary Association. When her children were young, she was a volunteer with the American Red Cross at the Atlanta Veterans Hospital. She produced and disc jockeyed a weekly radio program for the patients. It was one of the many activities in life that brought her great joy.
Virginia loved art and was an accomplished painter. She continued to study art well into her 90s. She was always up for adventure and fun and traveled with her husband to many exciting places around the world.
She and her husband were members of Chamblee Baptist Church and later Johns Creek Baptist.
Virginia passionately loved her family and friends and they her. Affectionately called “G “ by many, she made friends easily and saw the best in everyone. She rarely complained, and was always determined to be her strongest and most positive self.
Virginia was an attentive mother and doting grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her three children Kay Tritt (Bob), Charlotte Bankston (Mike), Dr. Brad Greenway (JoEllen), six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by many of her neighbors, the Fab Five, and her Tuesday Night group.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. W.J. Greenway, her brother, Leslie Osborne, and her parents, Leona and P.W. Osborne.
The family would like to thank her caregivers Jackie and Jane, for the loving and compassionate care they gave her these last 15 months.
Donations in Virginia’s name can be made to the American Red Cross, 1955 Monroe Drive, Atlanta, 30324.
