

Al was born in Brooklyn, New York to Paul and Esther Gravitz and passed away in Sacramento, California after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He is survived by his children Ben and Sarah and his beloved daughter-in-law Karen. Al’s wife of 48 years, Marlene, predeceased him in 2009. He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Aaron Gravitz, Nathan Gravitz, Jacob Apollo and Noah Apollo and his companion of 12 years, Shirley Pacheco.
Al earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia and a Master of Entomology from the University of Minnesota. He pursued additional graduate studies at the University of California Berkeley and Oregon State University under a National Science Foundation grant.
He moved to Sacramento with Marlene in 1960 where he joined the faculty of Sacramento City College and taught Microbiology for 30 years.
Al gave back to the community by spending many summers as a program director at Jewish summer camps in Malibu, Oregon, Santa Cruz and Yosemite. Al was a kind, gentle, witty soul and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services and burial will be held Monday, January 15, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Home of Peace Cemetery, 6200 Stockton Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95824. All attendees please park inside the cemetery gates. If parking is too limited and you must park on the street, please make sure your doors and windows are locked and all valuables secured.
