Beverly Joan Yung was born on July 25, 1945 in Sacramento, CA to Charles and Lil Fong. She spent most of her childhood in the Sacramento area as well as time in Locke visiting with her cousins, aunties, and uncles. She attended William Land Elementary School, Cal Middle School and graduated from C.K. McClatchy High School as part of the Spring Class of 1963. She moved on to attend Sacramento City College where she studied cosmetology and earned her Associates of Arts degree. Beverly worked as a hair stylist alongside her good friends for the next 20+ years.
During Bev’s senior year, she caught the eye of a young budding basketball player by the name of Rodney. The two began dating and quickly became inseparable. Four years later, they tied the knot on May 14,1967 at the Chinese Community Church and embarked on a journey that would last the next 56 years. Later that year, Beverly participated in the 1963 Sacramento Moon Festival Miss Chinatown Pageant and placed 2nd. In 1972, the happy couple welcomed their first son Eric to the family and later the following year, they rounded out the family with their second son Brandon.
Beverly was full of life and enjoyed a variety of activities. At an early age, she learned to cook and sew from her mom and grandmother, loved caring for her koi pond and later found her green thumb and enjoyed spending time in the garden. She played several sports over the years including bowling, volleyball, tennis, and of course golf.
Bev and Rod were very active in their community. They both took on a number of different roles in whatever sports and activities that Eric and Brandon were participating in and later helped start both the Sacramento Warlords basketball organization and the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation. On any given night, you could find Beverly doing things like sorting t-shirts for the basketball tournament, working the various booths and concession stands, delivering tournament programs, hosting basketball players from Matsuyama, and building tee signages for the golf tournament. Once the doors opened at SASF, she was fixture in the kitchen and would often help with setups and cleanups after a variety of different fundraisers and events.
Bev and Rod loved to travel to play golf with family and friends. They would go to places like Orlando, Las Vegas, Reno, Scottsdale, Hawaii and all four corners of California. Often times they would travel with a group, but they would also have destination meetups with friends coming from the Bay area or Southern California.
Beverly always enjoyed get-togethers, family dinners and weekend outings for dim sum, especially with her grandkids. The grandkids were the apple of her eye. She loved them dearly, even when they were a bit wild and crazy. All the grandkids called Beverly “Mah-Mah” which is the Cantonese term for paternal grandmother. She loved good meals with family and enjoyed playing all the silly games that the grandkids would come up with, most of all the game Telephone.
Beverly passed away on the morning of July 5, 2023, from complications related to COPD and respiratory distress. She was predeceased in death by her parents, Charles and Lil Fong. She is survived by Rodney, her loving husband of 56 years; her older son Eric, his wife Mary and their three children Emma, Georgiana, and William; her younger son Brandon, his wife Janet and their children Jackson and Madison; her brother Gary and his wife Kimberly. Beverly will also be missed by many aunties, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and their families, as well as her large extended family and many friends.
