Cecil Escoffrey Moore, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a valiant battle with illness. Born on February 28, 1953, in Reno, Nevada, Cecil lived a life full of adventure, service, and love.
The son of Mildred Alexandria Pottinger and George Moore, Cecil was predeceased by his parents and his cherished son, Eric Moore. He is survived by his loving children, Mekala Moore, Dorothy Hamilton-Moore, Samantha Moore, and Marialea Pottinger-Moore. His legacy continues through his many grandchildren: Jasmine Wooten, Kenshawn Moore, Cody Moore, Kaimora Moore, Julian Hamilton II, Jerome Troy Streeter-Moore, Juliza Hamilton-Moore, Janeal Colman, Andolis Lartigue Jr., Adonis Lartigue, Adris Lartique, E'mani Marie Lee, Zahoni Moore-Thompson, and Eriq Moore-Thompson, as well as his 17 great-grandchildren. Cecil also leaves behind his dedicated siblings, Yeonnie John (Colette) and Carol Stanford (Michael), along with a circle of close friends, including Tony (Bubba), Vernon, Yvonne, John Jackson, and Bernie Andrews.
Cecil graduated from Procter R. Hug High School, where he was a basketball star who led his team to a major championship victory. His commitment to service continued as he served his country as a Naval Officer with the Navy SEALs, receiving an honorary discharge. Professionally, Cecil dedicated his life to public service, serving as a Probation Officer at the California Youth Authority and later as a California Peace Officer. He eventually transitioned to the Bureau of Land Management in Nevada as a Mapping Specialist, retiring after more than 20 years of dedicated service. His volunteer work as a firefighter for Washoe County demonstrated his unwavering commitment to his community.
His personal life was enriched by his love for the outdoors, often found fishing, camping, or traveling. Cecil was also a gifted woodcarver and artist, and he found joy in music, reading, and solving puzzles. He was known for his infectious laugh, humor, and kindness towards those less fortunate. A serious yet humble man, he was a fierce protector of his family, deeply intelligent, observant, and a profound thinker.
A service celebrating Cecil's life will be held on August 27, 2026, at the Center of Praise Ministries, Legacy Center, located at 2324 L Street, Sacramento, CA 95816. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available at COP.Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to a charity of your choice in Cecil's memory. They extend their heartfelt gratitude to Bishop Parnell M. Lovelace, Jr, PhD, DMin; Founding and Senior Pastor Center of Praise Ministries, Pastor Wayne Kirkling, Dr. La Vetta Coleman, D. Min, and all the COP supporting staff. Special thanks are also extended to Aim Elderly Care (Mary and Erwin), UC Davis Medical Center, Sutter Medical Center, and Lombard Funeral home of Dignity Memorial for the love, comfort, prayers, and support shown to Cecil and his family during this time.
Cecil Escoffrey Moore will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the love and light he brought into the lives of those around him.
