Born in Toishan, China, Cheng Boo lived through the Communist Revolution and World War II, relying on resourcefulness and fearlessness to survive. He was married to Sau King from a neighboring village for 72 years. Together, they successfully raised six children.
In Hong Kong, Cheng Boo and his wife supported the family by raising chickens. He built multiple barns in the farm and invented time-saving devices like continuous sluices to simplify water delivery to each tiered chicken cage.
He and his wife brought their family to America in the seventies. This provided their children with opportunities in education and life. He served at the Sacramento Chapter of the Yee Fung Toy Association and worked in the Stockton Del Monte Cannery, rising to the position of mechanic because of his ability to maintain the fruit processing machines, despite little knowledge of spoken English.
Cheng Boo enjoyed daily brisk walks to the park and long hot soaks in the tub, both of which undoubtedly contributed to his long life. He gave up smoking for his grandchildren. He taught them multiplication tables, drove them to music lessons and took them fishing.
Cheng Boo passed away after a long battle with dementia, cared for at the home of his daughter Mei. He is survived by his wife, brother, six children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
