Delbert Charles Russell died peacefully on March 13, 2014. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Roberta. Del, as he was called by his family and friends, had a profound love for the outdoors. He worked on dams, canals and major grading projects as a proud member of the Operating Engineers local Number 3. This love of the outdoors carried through to his leisure life where he volunteered as scoutmaster for Troop 431 and led 10 young men to the highest rank of Eagle Scout as they mutually enjoyed backpacking, canoe trips and even winter camping in snow caves! He also volunteered in planning reunions for his Alma Mater, McClatchy High School. Between work and his volunteer activities he still found time to enjoy his family and friends.
Delbert had 8 brothers and sisters and three children Stephen, Mark and Valerie. Delbert was also blessed by five grandchildren David, Sarah, Joshua, Rachel and Jordan. Two great grandchildren Taylor and Ashlyn Ledbetter made his life happier because it was not unusual to see Del cradling babies - any baby- he could find to hold and rock to sleep.
Delbert will be laid to rest at 11 a.m. March 19, 2014 at St. Mary's Cemetery at 6700 21st Avenue in Sacramento. A vigil service will be held on March 18 at Nicoletti, Culjis and Herberger Funeral Home from 4 to 7 pm. Refreshments will be served after the vigil service.
Arrangements under the direction of Nicoletti, Culjis & Herberger Funeral Home, Sacramento, CA.
