Gary was raised in Montclair in the Bay Area and attended Piedmont High School. He went on to attend UC Berkeley, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was an avid Cal Berkeley fan and enjoyed attending football games with friends and family. Gary served in the U.S. Navy in the early Vietnam years.
After the Navy, Gary started working in commercial real estate finance. He was a dedicated worker and loved the business. He worked at Pacific Mutual, Mason McDuffie, Coldwell Banker and then for himself. In 1973 he moved his family to the Sacramento area.
On August, 17, 2013, Gary and his wife Marie celebrated 50 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife Marie and daughter Ellyn both of Sacramento, his brother, Drew Donovan (Delila) of San Mateo. He had many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly.
Gary loved coffee and conversation and was in several coffee groups that met regularly. He was very knowledgeable about plants and was proud of the plants he was able to grow in Sacramento. His favorite place to visit was the Hawaiian Islands. He embraced the culture and embodied the "Aloha" spirit.
Gary was an amazing person, who loved life, his family and his friends. He will be deeply missed. The family would like to thank Dr. Behl and her staff for the excellent care and support they provided.
Services will be held at Our Lady of Assumption Church, 5057 Cottage Way, Carmichael CA 95608 an Thursday, October, 10, 2013. The viewing will begin at 12:30pm and a mass will start at 1:00pm followed by a reception at St. Johns Hall at OLA. Burial will take place at Jackson Catholic Cemetery the following day. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Sutter Cancer Center or to the Cal Grid Club of Sacramento.
