Jean Tsutomu Matsubara was finally reunited with the love of his life on July 12, 2021 at the age of 94. While his beloved wife of 66 years, Kiyoko Matsubara, died in October 2020, Jean held her memory close to his heart during his final days spent at his care home with his family at his side. Jean is survived by his daughter, Kerri Nelson.
Born July 31, 1926 in Isleton, California, Jean was the second oldest of four sons to Ichizo and Sumi (Okimura) Matsubara. Jean grew up on the Isleton family farm, until he and his family were relocated to Tule Lake internment camp during World War II. After moving to another relocation center in Minidoka, Idaho, Jean graduated high school, was drafted in the Army in 1945, and headed for boot camp in Texas. After boot camp and a brief furlough, Jean shipped off from Virginia on a liberty ship to France and was stationed in Germany during World War II. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Jean returned to California and attended trade school for mechanics in Los Angeles. In 1949, Jean began his 40-year civil service career as a mechanic for Cal Trans in San Francisco.
On February 20, 1954, Jean married his precious Kiyoko, and the two lived in San Francisco, California, before settling in San Bruno, California with their daughter, Kerri.
Jean was not a flashy guy, but a humble and devoted husband and father with a passion for riding motorcycles, hunting pheasants, and restoring dilapidated cars. With his keen mechanical ability, he often built gadgets around the house to make life easier and more comfortable for Kiyoko’s fragile hips. Jean never complained about anything and maintained a positive, humorous outlook on life. Over the years as a mechanic, Jean never turned down a friend or family member who needed his auto repair assistance. Jean will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to extend appreciation and gratitude to the entire staff at Starglow Care Home in Sacramento, as well as the staff at TLC Care Home in South San Francisco, where Jean received loving care and compassion for the last three years of his life. We would also like to thank the staff at Sutter Hospice Care Program.
A memorial service will be held at Harry A. Nauman & Son (4041 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento, CA) on August 28, 2021. Inurnment services will take place at the Japanese Cemetery in Colma, California at a later date.
