O'Bryan, John Tracy was born to Jessie Mildred Tracy and Alfred [Thomas] Rush O'Bryan on June 30, 1928 in Grand Junction, Colorado and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1946 and served in north China. While in the reserves in Honolulu he met Anita June Sweet on a blind date. John returned to the Mainland sailing a 39 foot Tahitian Ketch and they married August 21, 1954 in Anita’s parents Sacramento garden. They have five children – Richard, Erin, Jaime, Thomas, and Douglas, and seven grandchildren.
John received a BA from Sacramento State College in 1957 and retired from Sacramento County Public Works in January 1981. He was a Past Master of Three Pillars Masonic Lodge and was presented The Hiram and 50-year Member Award. John was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop One, enjoyed many summers at Camp Cody. He hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Stevens Pass and loved time spent outdoors. John and Anita traveled to South America, Asia, and Europe. One six-month trip in Europe was a SloPoke Caravan in a VW Vanagan; which they then drove around the US researching family genealogy. He enjoyed time spent at Bridgehaven on the Russian River, and at the macadamia nut ranch in Hawaii. He will be remembered for his stories, his yellow headphones, and his neighborhood walks with his dog. He had a good life.
