

Enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a pilot trainee in 1942 and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. upon graduation from pilot training. Flew 40 combat missions during WW II in the Pacific Theater in his B-24 while assigned to the 11th Bomb Group. Flew 41 combat missions during the Korean Conflict while assigned to the 3rd Air Rescue Squadron based in Japan. Flew air reconnaissance after the war in the western pacific. Remained in the Air Force and was assigned to SAC to fly the RC-121C's radar planes. Was the Commanding Officer for Detachment 9, 5th ATAF in Vicenza, Italy. Retired as a Major and as a Command Pilot at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio in 1963. Returned to California and attended Sacramento State College receiving a Masters Degree in Education. Taught business, classes at both Sacramento and Kennedy High Schools in Sacramento. Retired from teaching in 1988.
LC is survived by 2 of his 3 sons, Richard and Donald of Sacramento. His oldest son, Michael passed away prior. Also survived by his sister, Lois June Brooks of Vancouver, Washington, his brother, William Bert McCune of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, his sister-in-laws Evelyn and Janet McCune of Vancouver, Washington, his sister-in-law Joann Crider of Chicotah, Oklahoma, and his daughter-in-law, Marcie McCune of San Diego and grandson Michael McCune of Vermont.
Services will be held at Nicoletti, Culjis and Herberger Funeral Home at 5401 Folsom Blvd in Sacramento, Ca. on Tuesday 22 March 2011 at 10AM with visitation on Monday 21 March 2011 from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home. Burial, with full military honors, will be at the Sacramento Valley VA National Cemetery in Dixon, Ca. at 1 PM on Tuesday 22 March 2011. Major L.C. McCune loved his B-24's.
