R.E. Hensley (Bud), Jr. was my dad. He taught me the most important lessons on how to live my life and take care of myself. He taught me patience, especially while fishing, but mostly in dealing with life's challenges. He taught me the basics like how to change a bike tire and when it was time even my car tire. During duck season I would tell all my friends I was going duck hunting with my dad, but really what I was afforded was the gift of staying with my cousins (the women folk) during his trips while learning arts and crafts and the love of family. He also taught me the importance of sports and his love for them. I was my brothers little league’s team water girl while dad was their coach.
Dad had a bucket list. Two things on that list were to catch a Marlin and to fly in a biplane. We went to Loretto, B.C. during one attempt to catch that fish. He didn’t catch it that trip but we caught so many other fish he started an annual family fish fry. He went on to catch that dream fish on another trip to Mexico. We did successfully, thank goodness, fly in a biplane over beautiful Napa. A biplane has an open cockpit and the safety gear was a leather strap helmet and goggles. We soared high and of course upside down! It was a lesson in trust.
Dad was the kindest loving man. He never forgot your name because he would always call you by what he thought was fitting and you were stuck with it, all in his funny loving way. Dad called me Chicken Little. That is another fish tale for another day. Thank You Dad for your love and all the life lessons. I will miss you until my dying day. Then we can go fishing together again.
I LOVE YOU DAD
