Samuel "Sam" Martin Fry

Sam is survived by his parents, Gretchen Hess and Bob Miles, of Sacramento; wife Kimberly Patayon Fry, of the Philippines; siblings Gordon Fry (of Tacoma, WA), Rachel Cho (Sacramento), Daniel Fry (Sacramento), Alexia Casiano (Seattle, WA), and Audrey Nguyen (Sacramento). He was a proud uncle to his nieces and nephews.

Sam was born on December 22, 1993 in Amador Hospital in Jackson, CA. He moved with his family to Sacramento in 1999. Sam attended Courtyard Elementary, the GATE program at Phoebe Hearst Elementary, Sutter (now Miwok) Middle School, and West Campus High School, where he was active in drum line and debate team. He was working on his college degree and was close to achieving a BA in Psychology when he died. His goal was to become a counselor or social worker.

Throughout his adult life, Sam worked primarily in library services for the Sacramento Public Library system as well as the Sutter Medical Library in midtown. He began work as a book shelver, moving up to Technology Specialist, working in the passport office at the Central branch, and eventually to supervisor. Sam was also very interested in facilities and construction work, and pursued apprenticeships to learn skills in woodworking, plumbing, and other trades.

Sam married Kim Patayon in the Philippines in 2022 after meeting online and dating for several years, and the two of them were working diligently through the immigration process to reunite in the U.S.

Sam was an accomplished musician and often played improvisational piano, drums, marimba, and even guitar. He was a generous, witty, and dedicated individual who loved humor, music, books, basketball, and biking, and who was passionate about community service, grassroots activism, and helping others. He was an active and dedicated volunteer at Food Not Bombs, the Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen, and protests and collective action for women’s rights, prisoner support, voting rights, and Black Lives Matter.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024 (from 6pm-9pm to accommodate virtual attendance for those in the Philippines) at Nicoletti, Culjis, & Herberger Funeral Home in Sacramento, including a reception. A nondenominational chaplain will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Sam’s life.
