Sue Yueh-chu Hwang, 86, of Palo Alto, CA, and Sacramento, CA, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2021. She was born in Taipei, Taiwan, on March 15, 1935. Sue received a teaching degree in Art from the Normal University for teachers in Taipei. Tall relative to her classmates, and beautiful, she was married to David Dar-ling Hwang on March 8, 1960, in Hsin-chu, Taiwan. Sue was a homemaker and devoted spouse but was a capable beautician as well as businesswoman. In the early 1960’s, Sue and her two boys moved to the US to Tuscumbia, MO, to join her husband, a middle and high school teacher. She helped David manage and grow a tofu manufacturing company such that it became the largest supplier of Chinese soy products in the St. Louis area.
Sue spent most of her adult years in St. Charles and later St. Louis, County, MO, where she and David were avid members of the Taiwanese community and church. She raised two boys, Sam and Paul, both of whom became medical doctors, in dermatology and pediatrics. She had a beautiful voice and loved to participate in Taiwanese community activities such as singing and cooking for the social events. A dancer throughout her early years, she later picked up golf and played with David when they had spare time. She enjoyed Taiwanese TV programming and was quick to smile and laugh. Many loved her wry sense of humor and her generosity and caring for her friends and family. Her pride and joy were her 4 grandchildren: Matthew, Andrew, Alex, and Emily Hwang, all graduates of prestigious colleges in the US, and she never refused an opportunity to care for them.
In 2004, her husband, David, shortly after retiring as a teacher, was the victim of a tragic accident and passed away on May 21, 2004, after 45 years of marriage. Sue then moved to Palo Alto, CA, to be closer to her children and spent the years from 2004 through 2021 in the Bay area where she was a member of the Canaan Taiwanese Christian Church in San Jose as well as the Chinese Immanuel Church in Sacramento. Over the past 5 years, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, eventually requiring memory care in February of 2021 in Sacramento.
She is survived by her sons, Sam Hwang, MD, PhD, and Paul Hwang, MD; daughters-in-law, Kathy Hwang, MD, and Annette Hwang, MD; and her grandchildren Matthew, Andrew, Alex and Emily.
