Dr. William “Bill” Pierson 71, of Scott Depot, originally from Charleston, passed away August 26, 2019 after a long battle with cancer.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents John P. Pierson and Ruth Pierson Wagner. He was born and raised on Garrison Ave. and met the love of his life, Barbara Walls at the age of 14. She was his rock. Bill received his PhD in electrical engineering from University of Missouri. Teaching was his passion and he touched so many lives while doing what he loved most. He was a professor of engineering at WV Tech for 28 years and for 15 years at Marshall University, where he helped re-establish their engineering program. He retired from Marshall in 2015.

Bill was loved by so many family and friends. He is survived by his wife Barbara of 51 years. Sons Dr. William “Bill” Jr.(Jennifer), Dr. John Patrick Carter Pierson (Michelle) and daughter Sarah Deweese (Jonathan). He has seven wonderful grandchildren that he loved dearly; William Pierson, Adrianna Pierson, Ava Pierson, Zachary Pierson, Emma Pierson, Andrew Deweese and Annabeth Deweese. He also is survived by his sister Ruth Frame and many wonderful nieces and nephews and friends.

Bill was a humble man and had many accomplishments in his life but receiving the Lord as his savior prior to passing, is by far his greatest. We now have the hope to see him again one day.

The family would like to thank Hospice for their wonderful, loving care.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Thursday, August 29 at 7:00 pm at Casdorph and Curry Funeral home in St. Albans, WV with his dear friend John Ferguson and Pastor Jeff Davenport officiating.

Gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00 until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Curtis Price Way, Charleston, WV 25311

I met Bill when we were both on the faculty at WV Tech. We later served together on the NCEES FE exam committee. It was Bill who asked the examination engineer to invite me to join the committee. It has been an honor to work with him at NCEES and to follow in his footsteps on the WV Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. I always enjoyed talking with Bill. He had a quick wit, a great sense of humor, and always had an interesting observation or useful idea. Bill was an outstanding individual and professional. He will be greatly missed.

My Mother, Joan Pierson Gardner was Bill's first cousin. She was the oldest daughter of August Pierson and lived in Huntington. (She passed away March 27 at age 89). I met Bill at several family reunions, probably his wife and children too. There were always so many Pierson relatives there I couldn't keep them straight.
Please accept my sincere sympathy. Losing a loved one is hard, but sending them on to a better place helps.

I first met Bill when he was a college student at WVIT. He rented a very small house from my parents. Later, I had the pleasure of working at Tech and meeting Bill again. He was always such a gentleman. He will be missed.

Barbara and Family

Carl and I remember with fondness the many events and gatherings at Tech shared with faculty families. Having served on so many committees with Bill, I saw first-hand and early in our careers what an intelligent, committed educator he was. Barbara, I remember too what a wonderful student you were in my classes! We came to the visitation this evening, but unfortunately could not stay for the service--there were about 10 folks ahead of us when it was time to begin. The enormous crowd affirms that the entire Pierson family is loved and respected by so many. We realize your hearts are aching, but we know you will cherish so many wonderful family memories.

Prayers for comfort and peace,
Jo Harris

The best. The very best. No other words to describe Bill. The engineer's engineer - he knew not only the theory, but precisely how it fit into real things. I've been through medical school and had more classes than God, but nobody - nobody - ever taught me as much about engineering - and more importantly, integrity - as William Pierson.

Dr. Pierson was a very influential mentor in my engineering studies. He went well beyond his role as professor and he is the reason I am an Electrical Engineer and PE today. I was in his class at Marshall when the 9/11 attack occurred and will forever hold his memory in high esteem.

I extend condolences to his family during this tough time.
