Thomas Joseph Murphy passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at the age of 79. Born to the late Dr. Oliver and Dorothy (nee Tracy) Murphy. Beloved husband of Virginia "Ginny" (nee Martin) Murphy for 54 years; loving father of Stephen Thomas Murphy and Lynne Marie Murphy; dear grandfather to Lillian Marie Hofstetter and Hunter Murphy Hofstetter; loving brother to Barbara (nee Murphy) Ficht and Robert Murphy and wife Lisa; devoted uncle and great-uncle; loving godfather; dear friend to many.
Thomas graduated from St. Louis University High School in 1959. After graduation, he attended St. Louis University, was a reservist in the U. S. Army, and graduated from the University of Missouri - St. Louis with a B.A. in Accounting and Business. After working for Shell and Pennzoil for nearly 30 years, he retired at the remarkable age of 54. During twenty-five years of retirement, Thomas spent his time traveling with family and friends; playing racquetball and tennis; and teaching himself financial investing. At home, he enjoyed watching British murder mysteries and his beloved St. Louis Cardinals. Early retirement also gave him the opportunity to celebrate many a happy hour with his bride, Ginny. Sláinte mhaith!
His favorite hobby was biking; his favorite ride was the KT trail. During thousands of miles of biking, Thomas and the late Robert A. Eaton would discuss politics and the stock market; they even served as official trail rangers. Later in life, Thomas traded his racquets for golf clubs. His newly discovered interest often found him at the driving range in Creve Coeur Park or on the quirky links of the St. Ann International Golf Course.
A memorial Mass for Thomas will be said on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 11 am at St. Richard Parish, 11223 Schuetz Rd, St. Louis. After Mass, internment will take place at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, 11101 St. Charles Rock Rd, St. Ann. There will be a celebration of Thomas' life, following the internment. Details to follow.
Memorial donations are preferred to the family of Thomas J. Murphy, to establish educational scholarships for his grandchildren; or donations to his parish, St. Richard Catholic Church; or to the American Cancer Society in his name.
