Born on January 10, 1944, in Sumter, South Carolina, to the late Harvey and Ella Mae Geddings, Gerald lived a life full of passion, curiosity, and purpose. A proud patriot, he honorably served in the United States Navy and Air Force starting his military career in 1962 and dedicating much of his life to his country. During his distinguished military career, he served both on land sea and air, including active service during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Navy after many years of honorable and devoted service.
Gerald was truly a renaissance man—his talents and interests were as diverse as they were deep. A gifted musician, he could play virtually any instrument placed in his hands, and his love for music brought joy to all who heard him. He was also a talented painter, an avid fisherman, a skillful carpenter and an accomplished pilot who took to the skies for over 50 years.
An avid lover of antique cars, Gerald was a proud member of the Antique Auto Club of America, as well as the Elks Lodge #2866 and American Legion Post 372. He was also deeply engaged in online support groups for those living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), offering encouragement and insight to others through his own journey.
After graduating high school, Gerald attended College of Charleston and later transferred to the University of South Carolina, where he played in the Marching Band—a joyful chapter that reflected his lifelong connection to music.
Gerald was a member of Mensa International, the world’s largest and most well-known high IQ society—an achievement that reflected his brilliance, curiosity, and love for learning. He was remarkably computer-savvy, endlessly inquisitive, and had a deep appreciation for travel. His adventures took him across the globe, and he embraced the world with an open mind and heart.
Though he described himself as a man of faith but “not too spiritual,” Gerald embodied kindness, compassion, and love in all that he did. Above all, he cherished his family and the time spent with those he loved most.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Ella Mae Geddings. He will be missed by his brother and sister-in-law Tim and Teri Geddings, sister Sheryl Carter, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Billy and Marianne Hoylen, sister-in-law Michelle Hoylen, and nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind great grandsons Caden Notario and Briggs Mikailonis, granddaughter and grandson Amber and Jonathan Mikailonis, daughter and son Chelle and Trace Wilson, and his beloved wife of almost 60 years Kris Geddings. He leaves behind family and friends who will forever remember his wisdom, humor, and gentle spirit.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 3, 2025, at Hardage-Giddens St. Johns Funeral Home, 1285 St. Johns Parkway, St. Johns, Florida 32259. A Graveside Service with Military Honors will take place at 11:00 a.m. (Lane 2) on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218.
In lieu of flowers the family has requests that denotations be made to the COPD Foundation and American Lung Association, Wounded Warrior Project, Wounded Warrior Family Support or the charity of your choice.
The world is a little darker for his family and friends who loved him, but we know he is playing the piano and singing away up in haven for his family and friends who have gone before.
