

James Darryl Smith, 66, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away suddenly and far too soon on July 28, 2025. Born on June 10, 1959, in Ashland, Kentucky, to John and Rhoda Smith, Darryl lived a life marked by passion, purpose, and deep love for his family and community.
A gifted athlete, Darryl was a two-sport standout who earned a scholarship to Cumberland College, where he continued to pursue his love for sports. His dedication to athletics extended far beyond his college years. He served as a respected Division I basketball referee for over 30 years, known for his fairness, professionalism, and deep knowledge of the game. In recognition of his lifelong contributions, he was inducted into Ashland’s CP-1 Baseball Hall of Fame as well as the NEKBOA Hall of Fame for Kentucky High School Officials.
Darryl had a deep passion for all sports, especially golf. He loved his daily walks, time at the beach, and staying active. He was known for his quiet strength, kind spirit, and subtle humor leaving a lasting impact on all who had the joy of knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rhoda Smith.
Darryl is survived by his loving wife, Cindy Pride; his four brothers: David (Whitney), Doug (Karen Haack), Daniel (Karen), and Deron (Susan); his daughters: Jamie (Drew Dieckmann) and Erin (Neil Smith), stepchildren Danae’ (Carl Bunso), Daniel (Mandy Pride), and Ryan Pride. He was a proud “Pops” to grandchildren Gavin, Gracyn, Lyla, Sutter, and Sully and step-grandchildren Mariah, Isaiah, Eli, Noah, Izzy, Aliza, Caden, Gavin, Mason, Roman, and Lexi. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who cherish him deeply.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a time of visitation on Saturday, August 2nd from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 10:30 a.m. at:
