Nina Lee Lanier Steckel, 80, of Jacksonville, Florida, was born on December 1, 1945, to Lee and Harridelle Lanier. She passed away on October 3, 2026.
A loving mother, grandmother, cherished friend, and devoted animal lover, Nina possessed a generous heart and a remarkable gift for making those around her feel valued, comforted, and cared for. Throughout her life, she found great joy in her family, friends, sorority sisters, and beloved pets, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
A proud graduate of St. Johns River College, Nina went on to enjoy a long and dedicated career. She first worked for American General, formerly known as Independent Life Insurance Group, and later joined Blue Cross and Blue Shield, where she dedicated 21 years of service. Her commitment to her work reflected her dependable, caring, and conscientious nature.
A caring member of her community, Nina enjoyed opportunities to give back and make a difference. One fond memory she shared with her daughter was going downtown with her organization during the River Run to hand out cups of water to the runners. Her willingness to participate in community efforts reflected her generous spirit and desire to help others.
A devoted sports fan, Nina especially loved the Florida Gators and the Jacksonville Jaguars. She enjoyed attending games whenever she had the opportunity, cheering on her favorite teams and sharing in the excitement of the sport.
A mother and grandmother whose greatest joy was her family, Nina adored her daughter, Jennifer Steckel Mackey; her son-in-law, Robert Mackey Jr.; and her grandson by marriage, Jacob Lee Mackey. She loved spending time with them and took great pleasure in spoiling them whenever she could. Through thoughtful gestures, shared moments, and countless acts of love, she made her family feel truly special.
A treasured member of Beta Sigma Phi, Nina held a special place in her heart for her sorority sisters. The friendships, laughter, and fun they shared brought her many happy memories throughout the years. She was proud to belong to a sisterhood known for its outstanding community efforts and service to others. More than friends, her sorority sisters were an extended family who brought her companionship, joy, and lasting memories.
A passionate gardener with a special love for violets, Nina found happiness in caring for her plants and watching them grow. She also expressed her love through cooking, often preparing her favorite soups and other dishes for the people she cared about. And, in a way that was uniquely Nina, she became famous for bringing sweet treats to the dentist—a little tradition that was sure to bring smiles!
A devoted animal lover, Nina cherished her cats and dogs as beloved members of her family. Ginger, Smokey and Tana, Sheena, Wimbley and Harley, Luna and Ivan, and her dearest Sweetie all brought her companionship, comfort, and happiness. She also lovingly cared for Gidgett whenever her daughter was away. Her love for her animals was deep and unconditional, and it brings comfort to imagine her beloved pets together with her in heaven.
A woman remembered for her generous heart, caring nature, and joyful spirit, Nina touched the lives of those around her in countless ways. Whether through her devotion to family and friends, the laughter she shared with her Beta Sigma Phi sisters, her enthusiasm for sports, her beautiful violets, or the meals and sweet treats she lovingly shared, she made life a little brighter for others. Often, it was the simplest gestures that left the most lasting impressions.
Survived by her beloved family, Nina leaves behind her daughter, Jennifer Steckel Mackey; her son-in-law, Robert Mackey Jr.; and her cherished grandson by marriage, Jacob Lee Mackey. They will forever hold close the memories, lessons, laughter, and love she gave so freely.
Forever loved and deeply missed, Nina will remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Though she is no longer here in person, the love she shared and the memories she created will continue to bring comfort and warmth to those she leaves behind.
