Born in Springs, South Africa, Rina spent the first 38 years of her life in South Africa before moving to the United States with her family, where she would go on to leave an indelible mark on the world of golf. A celebrated LPGA professional and highly respected instructor, she served as the head golf professional at Walt Disney World and later as Director of Instruction at her own schools as well as the College of Tokyo Sports and Recreation. Her career was decorated with honors, including being named LPGA National Teacher of the Year in 1983 and being recognized multiple times by Golf Magazine as one of “America’s Top 50 Instructors.”
Rina’s teaching philosophy was rooted in seeing each golfer as an individual. Known for her wisdom and wit, she often reminded her students, “The longest shot in golf is only six inches – between the ears.” She shaped the game for countless players around the world and inspired many to discover not only their swing, but also their confidence.
Beyond the fairways, Rina lived a full and joyful life. She loved playing the piano and painting, and she was always the life of the party—bringing energy, laughter, and warmth wherever she went. Among her proudest joys was her family, especially her beloved granddaughter, Alexa.
She is survived by her three sons, Mark (Kacey) McCann, Clive (Deirdre) McCann, and Ronald (Melissa Wilson) McCann, and her granddaughter, Alexa McCann.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date, where her family will celebrate her remarkable life and enduring legacy.
Rina will be remembered not only as a trailblazer in golf, but also as a mother, grandmother, and friend whose light and spirit touched everyone around her.
