Dennis (Denny) Harold Wipke, 76, of St. Louis, passed away Thursday, June 27th, 2019. He was the beloved husband of Carol Wipke. Dennis was born April 16, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Ladue High School and graduated in 1961. He went on to attend the University of Missouri – Rolla, now Missouri S & T, and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

He married Carol Gillespie on September 10, 1966. They were blessed with two children, Chrissy and Jim. Dennis was very proud of his 34-year career as an Engineer working for Western Electric, AT&T and finally Lucent Technologies as a Senior Engineer. He had to retire at 57 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.

Dennis loved his family and believed his kids and grandkids were the greatest legacy he could leave in this world. He was very active with his church family at St. Paul’s and treasured his time with Men’s Fellowship and serving as the President of the Church Council. He enjoyed sports, particularly basketball, and took every chance he had to live an active life. Dennis was a devoted husband to his wife Carol and the most amazing dad and grandpa, sharing his love, wisdom and guidance with all of his family. He was strong and courageous throughout his long fight with Parkinson’s disease and will forever be seen as a hero by all those who loved him.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Carol Wipke, his daughter, Chrissy Wagner (Todd), grandchildren, Ally and Katie, and son, Jim Wipke (Jennifer), grandchildren, Jamison (Jared), Jordan, Jill and Jacob. I worked with Dennis at Western Electric. Dennis was always a professional, and I considered him one of my most valued coworkers. I am sorry to hear of his passing, and will keep him and his family in my thoughts and prayers.

I have incredible memories of Dennis. He helped me so much as a new switching equipment engineer for Southwestern Bell in Houston starting in 1981. He would travel down to Houston when we had major central office projects that had challenging floor space and cabling issues. I will never forget walking the various floors of the Houston Capital building with Dennis. The Capital building was really two old buildings and the floors didn’t match between the two of them. Dennis was so creative, so ingenious in figuring out how to manage the cabling and floor space in such a difficult situation. His attention to detail was legendary. His composure amid a chaotic situation was so reassuring. His memory for details was also amazing as he could recall the issue with a cable hole many years after we had last dealt with it. It was an honor and a pleasure to work with Dennis. I was blessed to have known him. Peace be with his family.

I enjoyed working with Dennis; he was always pleasant and helpful. The same goes for Mondays evening basketball pick up league; he was a good outside shooter.

Mr. Wipke was as memorable of a character of a man that I can remember. His positive enthusiastic presence was something I was drawn to as an assistant coach and great friends with his son Jim for our daughters soccer and basketball teams. He taught me that being a competitor and doing it with passion and honor was something worth pursuing. I can say for sure I will never ever forget him and am a better man for having known him and the Wipke family. It was an absolute honor to know him I only wish he had more time but the time he was here was special to all those he inspired. He has been and will be missed. May god bless his soul.

Respectfully
