Mary Genevieve (Gleason) Hughes, age 83, passed away on June 28, 2019, surrounded by family.

Mary was born on April 24, 1936 in St. Louis, Missouri. She resided in Clayton with her parents Edna and James Gleason and younger siblings, Robert and Diane. Mary graduated from St. Louis Academy where she made friendships that lasted a lifetime. She married the love of her life, Patrick Hughes, in February, 1958 at Church of the Annunziata. Mary and Pat were proud parents of four beautiful daughters Vicki Hughes, Joan (Richard) Spradling, Stacy Hughes and Trish (Michael) Sharkey. She retired from St. John's Mercy Hospital after over 30+ years and then volunteered there for many more years later. She was an active member and loyal patron of the American Legion Post #397 and Elks Lodge #9. Mary did not know a stranger and was generous, caring, and full of spunk. She opened her heart and home to the world and we are all better to have known her period.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughters Stacy and Joan. Mary's vivacious personality and memory are carried on by her siblings, Bob (Carrie) Gleason, Diane (Bernie) Gruszka; daughters Vicki and Trish; sons in law Richard and Mike; grandchildren Patrick (Laura) Hughes, Justin (Amie) Richter, Dawn (Matt) Lovelace, Brittany (Matt) LaRose, and Chad (Sabrina) Sharkey; great-grand children, nieces and nephews, cousins, and too many incredible and supportive friends to name.

People like Mary come around once in a lifetime and we will miss her forever.

My condolences to the family. I worked with Mary for over 25 years at St. John's (Mercy Hospital) and can't remember a more caring and special person. She always had a smile and a kind word. She'll be missed but Heaven will be an even more happy place with her there.

I wlll miss Mary! She was always happy and had a wonderful laugh. We met at the Elks and I delighted in the many conversations we shared. She was a cherished friend, irreplacable, funny, kind and warm hearted. Peace and love to all her family.

Mary was the best. She lived life to the fullest. She loved to go, be it for a drink , a party or vacation. Mary was in. She could make me laugh till I cried and she truly cared about others. A true spirit of live, laugh and love has left us and she will indeed be missed.

Mary was such a special person. She loved people. She loved opening her home and heart to everyone. I am lucky to be one of those people. She always had a smile on her face and asked about my kids. I loved listening to her talk about her life and loved her zest for life.

I almost forgot that Grandma's name was Mary...That's because she would never let me call her Mary and told me, and everyone who visited, to call her grandma. So that is the name I knew her by. She treated us just like she was our grandma. She always made me and my family feel welcome at her house, in her pool or visiting her at the legion. She truly enjoyed life and her family. She loved it when I would bring my children over to swim and play. It just felt like I was visiting family when we were there. I will miss you Grandma... Prayers to your family as I know they are going to miss you immensely. You were one of a kind and a truly caring spirit.

I will never forget playing gin with aunt Mary and Jordan until the early hours during those summers at Holiday in Michigan. She taught us how to play and every time we would beat her she would stand up and accuse us of cheating. Aunt Mary was a real character with a kind soul. She will always hold a special place in my heart.
