Anne Kemelman

Born in Demark, she came to the United States with her sister and threebrothers at the age of 2; she grew up in the West End of Boston.

In 1949 Anne moved with her husband and 3 children to Marblehead where she remained 1996 after her husband’s passing. She worked for many years as a medical secretary for a prominent ophthalmologist as well as for the Harvard Medical Library. Anne moved to the Waterfront Hotel in Salem and began her second life; she took up painting at the age of 88 and was very involved in the Acorn Gallery. Mrs. Kemelman was known for being an extremely elegant women.

Anne was the beloved wife of the late Harry Kemelman who was the author of the popular Rabbi Small series. She was the dear daughter of the late Harry and Rachel (Levinson) Kessin. Devoted mother of Ruth Rooks and her husband George of Swampscott, Arthur Kemelman and his wife Ziona of Israel and Diane Volk and her husband Stephen of New York City, NY. Loving sister-in-law of Ruth Kessin and Janet Kessin. Cherished grandmother of Nina Rooks Cast and her husband James, Jennifer Rooks Dolin and her husband Eric J. Jared Rooks and his former wife Cami Stanton; Anne Volk, Yonatan Kemelman, Micha Kemelman, Yoav Kemelman as well as 10 great grandchildren. Longtime caregiver Leaia Salles. Her life was blessed with numerous friends she encountered in her day to day life including but not limited to Gail Tregor and Debra Highberger.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 9th, 2013 at 1 PM at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin St, Salem. Interment will follow at Ahabot Sholom Cemetery, Danvers. Friends and family are invited to gather at the Salem Waterfront hotel for tea immediately following interment. Memorial observance will be held at the home of Ruth and George Rooks on Wednesday, 7-9PM, Thursday 2-4 & 7-9PM and Friday 1-4PM. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of your choice.
