Arthur A. Socolow, age 92 of Gloucester, formerly of Harrisburg, PA. Died on Monday in the Rosewood Nursing Home in Peabody. He was born in New York, NY and graduated in 1941 from Rutgers with a BS/MS in Geology, in 1947 from Columbia he received his PHD in Enviornmental Geology.
He was the former Director of the Pennsylvania State Geological Survey, Professor of Geology at Southern Methodist University in Texas; Boston University; University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He wrote in Who’s Who in America: “I have great respect for the individualism of man in the midst of a society and a world where there is an unavoidable interrelationship and interdependence of man upon man and of man upon his environment. While we strive to maintain our individualism, we must share our common resources and our common aspirations. This is the challenge that makes our lives worth living.” Beloved husband of Edith (Blumenthal) Socolow. Devoted father of Carl Socolow & his wife Holly of Camp Hill, PA, Roy Socolow & his wife Mindy of Westford and Jeff Socolow & his wife Amy of Lynnfield. Cherished grandfather of Rachel, Jared and Eli Socolow and Samantha Davenport. WW II U.S. Army Veteran. Services at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin Street, Salem/Swampscott line on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 12:00 Noon. Interment at Beechbrook Cemetery, Gloucester.
