Elaine Swartz, 63 of Peabody, MA and Bartlett, NH entered into rest on March 14 surrounded by her loving family. Elaine was one of the brightest, most intelligent, kindest, and selfless people on earth. She grew up in Chelsea, MA and simultaneously attended Simmons College and the Hebrew College, earning bachelor degrees in Spanish and Education from Simmons and Jewish Education from Hebrew College, and Masters Degrees in Library Science from Simmons and Jewish Education from Hebrew College. Elaine taught Hebrew, Spanish & German for 34 years in the Peabody Public School System and passed on her knowledge of Judaism and tradition as she taught at Temple Beth Shalom’s Hebrew School.
Early in her career she met her husband, Norman, with whom she shared 36 years of marriage and happiness. In her “retirement”, Elaine enjoyed all that life had to offer, including the many adventures that she and Norman were fortunate to have together: skiing and her Attitash family throughout the winters where she spent the last 30+ years mastering the beginner and intermediate terrain (when conditions were optimal) from the East Double Double chairlift (to skirt her fears of heights from the West Double Double) she could be found playing 18-27 holes of golf daily throughout the summers. In addition to those recreational activities, she could be found spending countless hours at Revere Beach in her lounge chair with a book, or simply mowing her lawn and basking in the glorious sunshine of New England. Elaine and Norman had a passion for traveling, and you could often find them either at Disney World or relaxing onboard one of their favorite cruise ships.
With her gentle, kind, compassionate demeanor, she touched the hearts of all who knew her. Her legacy will live on through her loving husband of 36 years, Norman Swartz, her children: Harolyn and Sam Fucile of Londonderry, NH, Bethann Swartz and Doug Hill of Jackson, NH, and Steven Swartz and Jenny Baxter of Rockport, ME, her grandson, Connor Fucile who adored his nana more than words can describe, sisters, Gail and Bob Gladstone of Peabody, Bobbie Merritt of NJ, Jodi and Andrew Liston of NY, and nieces and nephews, Brett and Danielle Gladstone of Gloucester, Sara and Steve Sherman of Danvers, and Paris Liston of NY . She is survived by her mother-in-law, Annabelle Swartz, and her sister-in-law, Suzanne Swartz both of Peabody. She is predeceased by her parents Samuel and Lillian Glassberg.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Kaplan Family Hospice House or the Peabody Veterans Memorial High School Library, where Elaine was always making donations. The best way to celebrate Elaine’s spirit, however, is through the kindness of doing a good deed for someone else, something to brighten their day with Elaine in your thoughts. Pay it forward with a smile! To quote her favorite Disney ride, “it’s a world of laughter, a world of tears…”
Elaine’s funeral services will be held privately. Please join us to reminisce about those times of laughter as we celebrate her life during Shiva beginning Tuesday, March 17 at 2 PM, Wednesday and Thursday beginning at 1 PM, Friday 1 PM until sundown, Saturday evening after sundown and on Sunday beginning at 1 PM at her late residence.
