

Frederic S. Shmase, 87, a beloved physician on the North Shore, died July 5 after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. He shared a wonderful 62 years, of marriage with Henrietta (Honey) (Menkes) Shmase. Born in Peabody, son of the late Robert and Lillian (Levin) Shmase, Dr. Shmase was raised in Peabody and was a graduate of St. John’s Prep, the University of Vermont and the University of Vermont Medical School.
Dr. Shmase was the co-founder of Lynnfield Medical Associates where he worked an incredible 55 years. He was a beloved and devoted internist to thousands of patients on the North Shore. His patients loved him for his medical knowledge, his bedside manner and positive outlook. At Lynnfield Medical Associates, Dr. Shmase created a family-like culture, impressing upon the staff to treat patients with care, dignity and respect. He was also a father figure to many of his co-workers, encouraging them to be the best versions of themselves by continuing their education. There were many instances where his colleagues became nurses and clinicians due to Dr. Shmase’s advocacy.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Shmase also leaves his three children, Jeffrey and his wife Anne of Peabody, Julie Montalbano and her husband Chris of North Kingstown RI, and Anne Kasperowicz and her husband Pete of Fairfax, VA; six grandchildren, Hannah and Benjamin Shmase, Luke and Theo Montalbano and Georgia and Sam Kasperowicz. He was predeceased by his grandson, Alexander Shmase. Dr. Shmase took great pride in his loving family and was thrilled with the close relationships they have with each other. He called that his legacy.
Services will be held Sunday at 11 at Temple Ner Tamid in Peabody followed by a graveside service at Maple Hill Cemetery.
